Cowboy with an economics degree  Grin
Not economics it is algebra. Come on man. Grin It falls under distribution. The -1 exponent and the -4 exponent the negatives cancel out and the the exponent of 4 is distributed. 4^2=16 is the same as 2^2*2^2=16 is the same as 8^2/2^2=16 and so on the exponent can be distributed to the derivatives. Numbers are logical. Just do not use begs the question if you do not know what it means or I will go into an explanation of terms of logic. Just do not ask me to remember any names. Grin

I got this in an email a few minutes ago, it's a fun little brain teaser.

If:
2 + 3 = 10
7 + 2 = 63
6 + 5 = 66
8 + 4 = 96

Then:
9 + 7 = Huh??

Bryant,

     That's what I got too, though it did take me a couple of minutes to figure out   My biggest problem with math has always been coming up with the correct number, but not really knowing how I did it. Grin  Teachers always got on to me for not showing my work....

Whoever drafts me I guess, I was at Weatherford Jr College last year and didnt pitch a whole lot commin off of arm surgery, but got drafted by the Mets, I decided not to sign though. I wanted to go to a 4 year school and get some more innings, and more money, so now Im a sophmore at Texas Tech. Plan on signin this year though, If not this year then next year I will for sure.

Need help with algebra get a tutor.  Most schools have a math lab. Just camp out there. I needed the writing lab. But when they see you really trying to learn they will really try to help.

she said that was what she got too but she didnt know if she was doing right. OK now for the real question.... have any of you all ever NEEDED to know how to work a problem like this in life? i for one have not! Evil

PEACHCREEK, I ASKED MY ALGEBRA TEACHER IN HS AND COLLEGE THE EXACT SAME THING, BOTH OF THEIR RESPONSES WAS "YOU MAY NOT, BUT YOU NEED TO FIGURE OUT THE PROPER STEPS TO TAKE TO GET THROUGH A PROBLEM IN LIFE."  I LAUGHED AND GOT SENT TO THE PRINCIPAL IN HS, IN COLLEGE I DIDNT LAUGH SO MUCH I LIKED MY PROFESSOR.  IF I HAVE A PROBLEM IN LIFE THAT IS THAT DIFFICULT, ILL JUST SAY PISS ON IT HAHA.

While I have not used that exact thing it is similar to logical reasoning. Learning how to process the information logically is how many people approach many problems without realizing it. I did not realize just how much it comes into play until I took Symbolic Logic. You take an argument turn it into symbols and apply rules similar to Algebra. Now that I have used many times. There is a reason people do not like to argue with me. I do not argue points I analyze their argument and prove the argument wrong. It is an outstanding problem solving tool and good way to approach many problems in life. Stop think about it as math and think about it as a way of thinking and how to solve a problem without knowing all the facts. I think Algebra helps more than math. I can get a calculator to tell me 2+2 but when you do not know what you are dealing with and life is full of variables it gives you a way to tackle many of life's problems. If not it will kill your GPA too Grin

149

If:
2 + 3 = 10   5=10
7 + 2 = 63   9=63
6 + 5 = 66  11=66
8 + 4 = 96  12=96

solve for 9+7= x

9=63

7 = 12-5     7 = 96-10 therefore 7 = 86

9 + 7 = 63 + 86

63 + 86 = 149
