Just reading I would not. They might work as a one out dog. But if someone has used one I would like to learn more.

In my quick read I saw something about dog aggression. But I have never been around one and did not read much. I would like to know more about them.

im pretty sure you can own one, in fact there are several people that breed them here in the US. i think where one would get into trouble is if they bought one from another country and had it shipped in. i believe, correct me if im wrong, you have to wait for the pup to be quarantined for a few months before allowed on US soil.

I know in Texas there's no certain breed of dog that you can't own , but they will have to be quarantined if they are imported

wouldnt a canary island dog be considered an import seeing as thier is no native breed in the US. I am going to research this..i have always been intrigued by the canary island dogs size, but i have always been told that they are not legal to own in the US. I have friend that works in Customs he might would know. I will let yall know what he says

Look up sanderskennels.com
I know of a few breeders in the US. He just happens to produce the best looking ones in my opinion. As far as legality I don't think it's illegal to own one.

I have cousins that rasie them in Florida they switched to them because the pit got banned in there area.
He's had then for 10yrs now and swears that they will catch hogs.  When I went for a visit I was impressed  with the size and look of the dogs. They pass the eye test but as soon I put another dog out, they went right after it full attack and then turn there agrression turn on my friend. I don't blame the dog just there knucklehead owners. There history dates way back and you're right they  were bred to kill stray dogs on the island. After the stray dogs were cull the dogs were used to fight one another. Once fighting was banned the dog had no more use for the country that bred them. You can import them to the U.S. Just like the dogo or taso. IMO they don't have the temperament that hogdoggers need when it comes to being around packs of strange dogs, family, and friends. If you're  looking for PP or guard dog work than they fit the bill. Look for them to be the next breed to be banned due to bad owners. If you walk down the street of south Miami you see what I'm talking about. Just a matter of time before there in the news in a bad way.

No dog breed is banned by the U.S. Government that I know of. Some municipalities have banned breeds. Dog fighting is illegal as we well know from the news. But there are breeders here in the U.S. advertising the dogs. So if they are illegal it would be easy to catch them.

Oops it is illegal to own wild animals like wolves, foxes, Coyotes, and such. But I believe you can get permits for those too.
