Ive been pondering a bit. Im wondering about what everybody else thinks. I see where different people post about different GREAT dogs. Most of which to me seem to be Males. Im not talking about your average good dog. Im talking about GREAT dogs.  I would love to hear about and see some of these GREAT females. Im talking about the ones that will take a track and run it untill it produces a hog at the end of it, 4- 5 hours or whatever it takes. In my opinion it takes these kind of females to produce good dogs ( backed up to a GREAT male of course ).

Do you all think that on average there are more GREAT males or GREAT females or about the same.

Me I think there are more Great males . Or at least i have hunted behind more and seems like i see or hear about more Great males than females.

I have owned one in my life that was the Best I have ever had. Maybe not the best dog in the world but the best I have ever had.

Again Please post up your opinions and pictures of these GREAT females , if you have one.

The dog on the left is a great female. One determined hunting machine. The one on the right is a young male by her, he's sizing up to be as good as his mother. The best part of this female is she will produce as good as her.

I am an old man and have only been hog hunting 14 years. However, I ran bunches of bird dogs for many years all over the country. The bird dog boys have got it figured out but the horse boys were the first.

The secret to great breeding is a great female. There are lots of champion bird dogs that won multiple open championships but never produced anything. I know of 1 female that was bred to 6 different males and produced champions in every litter.

There is a guy in Alabama named Frank Thompson that came up with the prepotency index. What this means is how many winners were produced in relation to the number of pups. Example: Dog 1 is bred to many females and produces  say 100 pups. These 100 pups produce 10 winners. Dog 2 is bred to fewer females and produces 50 pups. These pups produce 10 winners. Both dogs produced the same amount of winners but one dog did it with half as many pups.

The great female is a treasure and the bird dog boys call them "blue hens". They guard them like their sisters virtue. If you have a great female and can find a good male and they are compatible you are in luck.

My problem is that I just don't know anybody personally that has a great female that is breeding it. They hunt the good ones and use something else for breeding which is bass ackwards.

x2 and it makes NO SENSE to me.

Its risky ---I talked to an old Dogo breeder of years, he said "SON---by the time a bitch is 4 years old you should have a 2 year old daughter of her to replace her"--- NOW, that's a difficult thing if ya ask me, because some just cannot reproduce themselves or better which is the goal so I asked him ---"he said SON by the time a bitch is 4 years old you should have a 2 year old daughter to replace her--- now go think about that"

I guess he felt bad for my lack of brain cells and he further explained, a bitch is what will keep you going, MALES can be found anywhere a GOOD BITCH cannot be found that easy and if someone has one he ain't gonna give her up for no amount of money IF he knows what he has and what he is doing--- anyhow he says its best IF you take the risk and breed her ASAP get pups out of her and PROVE THOSE--- IF she cannot better herself then CLEAN UP and move forward--- the VALUE of a brood bitch is determined IN THE WHELPING BOX NOT in the woods  ---ladies and Gentlemen, AGREE or DISAGREE with me that's is my belief--- I TEST my girls in a VERY controlled situation JUST ENOUGH to give me a warm fuzzy feeling then I let their SONS and daughters prove her, its worked well for me.

Then again its all about what is ones priority not everyone is a breeder or has interest in that, some folks want to HUNT and that's their priority they will HUNT everything they have to the ground and then go and buy more or get their dogs from someone who does breed or interest is breeding, as a hunter and as a breeder IF you can get a good person to work with you then its a WIN, WIN situation, the hunter gets its hunters and the breeder gets his dogs prov-en for him (no breeder can possibly work everything he produces).

With much respect.

The problem is, that a great female may be a lousy producer.  You get your hands on a really nice female that can reproduce herself and you've struck gold.

I feel there are as many in both male and female from what I have seen...

If I HAD TO train one dog up for a "one dog contest for your life".... it would probably be a male....

I am, however, from the horseman perspective on breeding... Years ago, I heard a great trainer say, "You can rent that stud, but you better OWN that mare"...  Very true...

My Shine is one of the great ones... from day one she has simply produced hogs...TROPHY HOGS...  by herself.  Time will tell if she is as great a producer...  Bred her to the best dog I could find after, shall we say, "extensive" research...  Wink... The product of this matching, to my standards, one of ten is as good, if not better than her so far...  What does that mean?  Who knows... My gut tells me it's a rarity that a great dog produces itself or better...

Shiner, one bay dog, one catch dog, consistently.

And now a question for you Marvin, have not heard much about your cur dogs(which I assume this question is pertaining to),  but would like to hear about them.

As for your Dogos, PaulT's "Adora" seems to be one of the better specemins I've seen you produce,  what are your thoughts on that pertaining to the same question?

i have one female in my pack.. she is a redbone coonhound that i brought up running coons and she was pretty good at it... i moved out here to west texas and everybody had hog dogs so for the simple fact that she needed exercise i let her run with the pig dogs...that was 5 years ago... she is now probably the most important dog in my pack(not saying she is number one) because she has taught more dogs how to hunt and use their nose than i can count.. for sure 6 solid strike dogs through the years... in my opinion thats a good female

This is Jill, my all time favorite female. Not a good pic. but one of the very few that i have. She was a very good bear, and hog dog. She also was a very good producer.

Got her at a trade lot for $10.00, supposed to be a red bone

I have a female that is half plott and half mountain curr. She is the best dog we have ever owned and she is seven. Let me but it this way, anything you want her to find she will. Just show her the scent before the hunt or depending on the way we are hunting she knows what to look for. Have had four litters outta her and had a 100% turn out which is very rare, she had one pup which was her first litter(she got rattle snake bit and was lucky to be alive much less to have a pup) honestly have to say was better than her but sadly he had to be put down two years ago after being paralized. Her fourth litter of pups is only four weeks old so hoping that we will have the same success, will keep you guys informed.

I consider Mikes Tweety gyp in this category. She is a dang good dog as well as seeming to produce well also. Her offspring and grandpups seem to have a higher percentage of above average dogs as well as being pretty consistent in comformation with most having good leg length and long bodies.
