I always hear people talk about catchdogs that are the complete package. When I say complete package I mean easy handling, doesn't pull when they hear a bay, can be told when to go to a bay not just plow in when a dog barks, calm after broke off, not noisy in the dogbox, and have heard of a few that would circle and sneak in then catch like a train.  Where are these dogs at, I wanna buy every one of them? Grin no really though I've hunted behind good bulldogs and owned one or two but they always seemed like they lacked one or two traits.  Does anybody spend as much time with their catchdogs as they do working their strike dogs.  And if you have one of these kinda catchdogs, what did it take for you to get him there and how long? Just trying to get some opinions and first hand knowledge.  Thanks guys.

from all the cd's Ive seen the ones you are talking about have to be raised from a pup and have a lot of time invested in. I for one cant justify spending that much time on a CD, Id rather spend more time with my strike dogs. JMO

i love my catchdogs, and i do spend just as much time with my bulldogs if not more! u have to trust ur catch dogs and the only way i have found out what dogs to trust is by investing my time into them. i personally feel like a bulldog that is not properly handled associated with other dogs and humans could very well be a ticking time bomb! i read somewhere on this site to treat ur catchdog like a loaded gun and that made alot of sense to me. another wise choice of words! my catch dogs are my strike/bay dogs afflack and mine as well. to me a catchdogs first catch is like one of my strike dogs first find i get the same feeling, and hope they get better with time

i never feel like a dog is finished till the day the good lord says ur done, now take a good rest. i think every dog has room to learn and improve. the cycle of getting better never stops with each hunt a dog becomes wiser and we do as hunters

I am working a lot with my CD. I am socializing him. I let my six year old hold the lead. I try to teach him to give me whatever is in his mouth. Just games with a puppy but teaching manners and to obey.
