Well I've never owned a catchdog but I would have given a bunch of money for one this evening. I road around with the windows down until Chockie (my older cur dog) winded one. I let him out and he ran over 500 yards before he started baying. I had my 6 month old puppy with me. He got some good experience since this was his first time on a hog but he wasn't very useful. He'll get there though. They got him back up in some root holes a few times but he wouldn't let me get close to him to get a rope on him. I wasn't going to shoot him. He kept moving and finally got onto someone elses land and I called the dogs off. They got to bay him for over an hour so I was happy.

ha, good video....not sure what the problem was with roping him though, looks like he wanted a piece of something, so if you would have just stood out in the open, he would have ran right at you, the tricky part would be to get the rope on him and get out of the way at the same time and then reel him in  Grin

If it's not 100% fool proof and convenient, I'm not trying it by myslef. I don't mind letting them go to be caught another day if my dogs got practice and they and myself don't get cut. I stopped being greedy over wildlife several game wardens back.

I got a good Lariat but gettin' it on him would have only been the begining since I was alone and a half mile from the truck.

Good clean clear video. I wish we could bay one in open woods like that. Usually we are in palmettos or swamp and you can't see anything until you get within a few feet of the hog.

I have been in that exact situation many times. I used to have a lead in catch dog, but I had to put him down two years ago, due to his age and arthritis. I just got a new CD pup in Feb, so am waiting for her to get old enough so I can get back into having a lead in CD. It has been a rough two years without one, as my cur dogs seem to get wrecked every hunt here lately!

Its a bad feeling when you walk into a bay like the one in your video, your cur dogs get braver as they think help is coming, and they either try to catch the hog or crowd him too close and get wrecked. And you with no catch dog to send in and help!

Good video though!

Yea, I was about to monkey up that tree. I just knew he was gunna come around that log on my side. I could have got some real good footage if I'd have kept the camera going because he came straight back and got right beside me.
