The avg. hunter age post got me to thinking about this, I bet some of you guy's have had some old dogs.??
When I was 12 we lost a pit x black lab cross that was my dad's,there's a pic of him with me when I was a baby so he was at least 13, he was blind and had no teeth, only ate mom's left over biscuits and mashed potatoes. Even though he was blind,he would be the first one to the gate when someone pulled up to the house, he could also retrieve dove still, Dad walked a horse over him and he died from those injury's ....

When I was growing up my dad had a old mutt named nemo that he got from the pound. He was one of those dogs that you could let run loose and he would disappear for weeks at a time then show back up skinny, beat up and covered in cow poo. This dog had been shot in the eye, ran over on several occasions and been in countless fights with other neighborhood dogs. Ol nemo lived to be damn near 17 years old and one night we brought him to our new house for the first time and he took off and never showed back up. Till this day I have never seen a better dog!

I have a 12 year old still hunting. He don't get out much but when we take him, he will show us hogs every time. My son caught 3 with him in one hunt a few weeks ago. That old dog was completely worn out afterwards. I don't think he even moved for 2 days other than to eat.

I had a male cat. that died at 14 but not from old age. He was straight catch, would not hunt at all and would not go to a bay till he saw the hog. It was great not having to lead a catch dog. I bayed a boar hog right behind the house and he followed me out there and went to baying. I was thinking dam it took 14 years for him to learn how to bay and then he saw me and tried to catch with no teeth. He didn't make it threw it but at least that old fart died doing what he loved. RIP. DJ

I knew an old man that had a dog that lived to be 18. He owned a store and fed the dog a Milky Way candy bar every single day of its life. That was a good dog. I'm thinking my rat terrier is going to out live me. He has been run over a half doozen times by everything from 4 wheelers to trucks, to tractors... snake bit, shot, and everything else you can think of. Been thinking about putting him in my will... just don't know who i'd leave him to.

Back when I hunted waterfowl I raised a Lab that lived to be over 12, one of my hog hunting buddies had a Plott that lived to be over 14 and could still strike and run a hog....he was as tough as whet leather and straight hog or bear, and he has dogs out of him.....good for us.

My old Dixie female turned 14 this past March 23, 2011. She is retired, lays around on the porch and babysits a pup now and then. She still is in fairly good health, other than missing a few teeth and arthritis from running so much when she was young. Course, she is a tad overweight.......

A cur, greyhound and pit cross.... really not sure. We imagined he had pit, as he was so catchy until he lost most his teeth. He could beat a pure greyhound in a sprint. Maybe he was 100% cur. He would beat greyhounds in rabbit trials when young and was just another RCD for his first 5 years of hog hunting. He would get all cut up. But after he lost most of his teeth be became a cracker jack strike and bay dog. he is the second "catch dog" i have had that turned into a top find and bay dog in his golden years. Dog in photo barked quite a bit on the scent trail, but he got us the big boars. He died at 16.5 years age of a diabetic coma. He was hunting all night long two days before when this photo was taken. Toothless but still getting it done.
