I keep my hunting dogs penned or chained, I used to always try to keep pups penned, but lately as I get older I have let them run in the yard as long as there are no more that one or two. I have noticed anytime you keep two pups together either loose or penned together they have a tendacy to play when it is time to get serious. Wha are some opinions on whether to keep pups penned, chained or running loose?

In a pen has worked best for me, until there old enough to drag a chain to get them serparted from there blood then start working them together but back to the chain or seprate pen when finished working.  Ive never tried letting them loose so not sure how that would work just stating what has worked for me and my litters.  I've had allot of litters and my dogs are known to work toegther as a team great do to raising most of them.  Growing up together but seperated at a age they should be working (still a pup usually around 4 months) has worked great for me.

Loose dogs are always getting into trouble, usually with the neighbors!

I have always believed a dog running loose matures a lot faster than one chained or penned up. I can't do this anymore cause my neighbor has goats now and cause I had some get run over on the road. But I seperate my pups when they are about 5 to 6 months old. Usually pen with one of my older dogs.

a dog that runs loose seems to learn direction better because there out exploring or whatever i have 2 out now that im leaving out a while and i know people that have hogs around there house there dogs that are running loose will train therselves where a penned dog cant because it is penned but if its a road anywhre close you better keep them penned or you know what will happen, i like to keep a bulldog chained because it seems to help them on a leash better than in a pen, just my .02
