im wanting to add a bluetick to my pack       but only problem is i don't want dog thats open on track.   any of yall run em?

Dane,

I think the majority of bluetick hog hunters hunt them because they are open.  That is the purpose of a hound.  The hounds that run silent are generally culled by "real" hound hunters.  Generally, they make a great track dog for the average cur dog man.  Hogs get caught everyday by many different breeds of dogs.  Find what fits your style, and feed it tracks.  Blueticks fit my style.    Wink

I went a few days ago to a buddy's 20 acre pen and run some pups. A guy came over that had 3 blueticks, 2 grown dogs and one that was a year old.. The 2 grown dogs were scared of a hog and wouldn't run or bay. But the little 1 year old dog was all about it, that little joker bayed his heart out even though it was from about 30 yards back lol..  He couldn't keep up with the cur dogs runnin but that didn't stop him he was runnin behind them bawling every breath and goin just as fast as he could trying to catch up.. I would never own a dog that barks that much but I did get a kick out of watching him run around with them big ears flopping around all over the place.. You just gotta like any dog that has the want to that little fella had..

Never trained in a woods pen.  I always used the woods.  Staged hunts are fine for 6 month old pups, but after about 2 of those, they are as real as they get.  A good prospect does not have their prey behind a fence.   Wink

I figure a pen is the best shot a bluetick has at baying a hog..   Wink

big dog thats pretty big statement you made? so curs dont get it done? i have nothing against a loud mouth hound if you have a 15000 ac. lease with 1 or 2 hogs on it that only cross the road at night every now and then and you really need that cold nose but heck even then you just gonna run the dang thing all day and maybe catch one if your lucky??? get you some good cur dogs and find places that actually have hogs and catch 5 to 10 in a day how bout that??

We all have dogs that we prefer, curs, hounds, crosses, but what we need to remember is it dont matter if they bark alot or not it is the results you get. We are all in it to catch hogs. So all in all, hunt what you like.
