Like many of you guys, I too am at the mercy of friends/family/co-workers/sheer luck when it comes to finding land to hunt. I've never wanted to hunt public land during deer season for fear of being shot by some careless idjit, but I think off-season might be a bit safer. It's free, and I don't need anyone's permission! That said, does anyone know some good public spots to run dogs? Oh, and to be clear, I'm referring to places where one can LEGALLY hunt on public land.

I am not aware of any FREE places to hunt public land. Only public land I have hunted require an APH permit from the state for ~$50.00, and the season is only about 45-60 days long.
It would be nice to have a list compiled of FREE public hunting lands though.

Oooh, well I knew you needed the public hunt permit...but I thought it was a year-long thing since there's no season for hogs. Dang.

I think it ought to be a yearlong, but the parks service does not see it that way

fyi on hunting the National Forest land. You have to have all your dogs up on their rabies and tags on them. Then if you happen to hunt from a horse, you'll need to also have his Coggins test and papers present. We hunt alot of land around the Sam Houston National Forest around the Huntsville area. We've caught some good hogs out of national forests last year. I'll try and post some pics if I can find them
... your dogs better be legged up tho, we've

Trophytakers: Dang...looks like the national forest did well for you. I'm just trying to get started, so really just need a patch of woods that I can go to whenever I want. The Sam Houston NF is a bit of a drive, but I gotta do what I gotta do.
