Magic bullets?

Any crazy stories out there on bullet performance and travel?

A friend of mine had a good dog killed years ago from a "light" hand loaded .357" round. The bullet made almost a 90 degree turn upon impact killing the hog and dog. A tragedy that I think could have been avoided.

Share your experience so maybe we can all become a little more aware of proper calibers, bullets, and reloading selections for hogs. Or better yet............what not to do or use.

I've always had the best luck with regular winchester 30-30 150 grain.  They are not magical but very dependable and thats what matters to me.  That and never take a shot that you might regret.  I got some federal 30-30 shells as a gift a while back and they were about as sorry as they come.  They must have made a mistake and sent me some non-lethal police rounds because I would shoot hogs and they would get right back up. lol. Even had one miss fire, which has never happened to me before with a center fire rifle.  I did'nt know what to do at first, just pulled it out and threw it on the ground like it was a bomb.  lol.

The magic bullet I am referring to is like the one that had "Ninja like" performance on the late Pres Kennedy, however I think you hit the mark perfectly with your comments on dependable ammunition.
I guess I get to hear more horror stories than most due to the number of reloading junkies I associate with. The reason for most of these stories is that they just cant leave well enough alone in my opinion.
Reloading ammo is great but stay within the limits. Bullet performance isn't very dependable and ammo can be downright unsafe outside those limits.
As for your miss fire? That's probably what I would have done also! lol. For me its the same surge of panic I feel when my wife ask me if a certain dress she has tried on makes her butt look big!!!

There was a tragic accident around a year ago in Bennington. Couple young kids bayed a hog and shot it in the head. The bullet richoched and struck one of them in the head killing him. Bullets can do weird things. Around that same time frame in the Ardmore area a cop was trying to get a cat out of a tree by shooting it and the bullet came down in another neighborhood killing a man. They had a hard time trying to figure that one out and it wound up being from the cops gun. Why he was shooting a cat out of a tree I don't know. Check this out. He's very lucky!

I wish I had the information on the weapon and ammo used by the kids.

Were is the Ardmore area you refer to in the cop story. I need to know so I can be sure to stay the hell out of there!
Thats kind of like running over a dog with a patrol car to get it out of the street! Dang!!!

I got the story alittle wrong. I just reserched it and here it is.
NOBLE, Okla. (Aug. 4) - A stray bullet fired by a police officer trying to shoot a snake hit and killed a 5-year-old boy fishing at a nearby pond, officials said.

Austin Haley was fishing with his grandfather, Jack Tracy, Friday evening when Tracy said he heard a shot and saw a bullet hit the water just a few feet in front of the boat dock where he was standing.

Moments later, a second shot was fired that hit Austin in the head.

A Noble police officer who had responded to a report of a snake in a tree apparently fired the deadly shot while trying to kill the snake, according to City Manager Bob Wade.

Tracy said he initially thought he and his grandson were under attack by someone trying to kill them, so he put the boy into the back of a 4-wheeler and drove to his daughter's house about 200 yards away.

"Then two officers came out of the brush over there," he told The Oklahoman. "They didn't tell us they were the ones who had been shooting or that they had shot him. They didn't admit a doggone thing."

The boy was taken to an Oklahoma City hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A resident of the Crest Lane neighborhood called police after discovering a large snake in a tree, Wade said.

"I was told that they tried several ways to get the snake down, but it was still hissing at them and firmly lodged," Wade said. "What I was told is that the owner of the home either suggested or agreed that they should go ahead and shoot the snake, and then everything happened from there."

Wade refused to identify the officer suspected of firing the shots but said the officer has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

"This is so bizarre it has to be fully investigated. ... We're pretty sure circumstantially that it is the bullet from the police officer's gun, but it might be a bullet from someone else," Wade said.

A state investigation has been launched into the shooting, and it appears the fatal shot was fired by the officer, said Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Jessica Brown.

"We have no reason to believe it's not," Brown said. "But there certainly will be an investigation."

Tracy has little doubt about what happened.

"I'm not saying the cop shot him on purpose," Tracy said. "It was an accident. But let me tell you - if I had a kid and put him in this car and didn't put him in a car seat and he got killed on the way to town, they'd charge me with murder ... and what this cop did is a lot worse than that."

Thanks for chasing the story up "So Oklahoma Cur Dogs". Im not sure it changes my opinion of the police in that area very much though.
I dont even want to imagine what it would be like to suffer such a loss!

As sad a tragedy as this is its a great example and the reason I started this thread.
My goal here is to get a few stories posted for hog hunters (especially new hog hunters) to read and store in the back of their minds wile, reloading, selecting weapons, and firearm safety in general.

Its an even bigger tragedy when we cant learn from the mistakes of others.

If the Noble, OK police dept. had a lessons learned coarse implemented in there training program do you think little Austin would still be alive and fishing with his paw paw? I think so.

i carry a 44. or a .45 and the only loads i use are store bought...either ballistic tips or self defense type ammo.........my reasoning for this is that i have shot deer and hogs before with both pistols using fmj shells and "practice" rounds and on occasion i have seen the bullet blow through the animal and keep right on going........i hunt with dogs and the last thing i want is to end up shooting through a hog and injuring or killing a dog...........the self defense and ballistic tip type ammo almost always enters and fragments causing massive damage to the animal......thus a quicker/cleaner kill. and i dont think ive ever seen one exit or deflect on an animal even on a big nasty porker......this is just my 2 cents. happy hunting

I like to carry my 45 acp with rounds i reload my self.  i know each round is consistant and i know the performance of each.  but too each is own..
