why are a lot of hunters wanting bigger catch dogs ? I have always liked a 45lb to 55lb. pitbull myself and have never hada hog that 1 that size could not stop and handle .Just wondering why alot of hunters are trying to breed bigger catch dogs.

Feed them good hunt em hard. The best training can't make up for bad breeding.

I seen a hog flat run off with one this size on his ear and another pit tring to catch up again and hanging on his butt ended up losing him. That is why I like longer legged heavier cds

i like a little catch dog too, both have advantages and disadvantages, i think the little ones are alot quieter going in a thicket and alot faster, but will kinda get slung around a little more and might get ran off with, a big catch dog can keep one from slinging around so much but sounds like a herd of cows going in a thicket, i guess its just what works best, these hogs we have if they hear and different noise its back off to the races

My curs rarely need a catch dog for backup... usually if they hear me or the catch dog coming, they go ahead and catch out... I use a catch dog not to "stop" a hog.... I use him to "hold" a hog... since I started usin' a bigger CD, my cur dogs have taken way less damage from the slingin' bullchit....

I have seen pitbull hearings. But I like both. I would not say bigger is better. But I want longer legs to reach the ground on big nasty and a rear end big enough to slow em down. They don't get through the thick stuff as well though. So it all comes down to what you want. I don't want chrome on my truck either.

Like they say "big or small let's catch them alll" I would think the bigger the catch dog he would take Punishment under his neck or chest , but it happens to short catch dogs too. I am all for one that catches and holds .

I have seen several bigger cd that actually hunt go quiet through thick stiff, not just bust through it loud as a heard of elephants. The trick is that they are actually "hunting", not just catching, they pick a path of least resistance through the woods and almost sneak in. Its actually weird to watch if you get a chance, they go in with almost a swagger about them. All the ones that I have seen that are strictly lead in are heard of elephants style. I myself am not so much a fan of this style of crashing through the woods, but I am a fan of bigger cd's. I wish the dog I had right now was a little bigger. Even if it was ten pounds just in height and length, it would probably save me alot of heart ache and give me a little more time in the woods with him, he is 70 lbs.

I do like a small pit to hold hogs that are 150 and under but when we get on a really good hog, I like how our 90lb cd does in controling a large, rowdy hog. In simple terms, I think that the bigger the boat, the bigger the anchor needs to be. ![Grin](http://www.easttexashogdoggers.com/forum/Smileys/default/grin.gif)

I'm liking this deal. both my bulldogs are leggy. I have one that's more lean and slender that can get there quick and quieter then the biggun. but with one on each ear it works pretty dang nice and less damages on all dogs. If we get in the real thick stuff I can send the smaller one and when she hits send the other. if the hog breaks before they get there they have enuff leg and stamina to go ahead and shut it on down. I little bit of both works good for us.

I like a bigger type catch dog because they can anchor better 70 - 75 lbs. I like one that will hold and not fight the hog that is a big key a lot of game bred dogs want to fight the hog if you choose carefully you can find a holding type dog like this certain bloodlines do this . Also when I say I like a bigger type catch dog that means a athletic dog one that has speed, quickness , fast on his feet and one with a hard mouth. Bigger does not mean better if the dog is just all weight and noting else. I like one that will think a little bit , one that will not just blow off in a briar thorn thicket getting hung up making all kinds of rackett noise but one in that situation that will find his way in and then explode on the hog in the last few yards . Last five yards I want my dog to explode like a linebacker on the hog, major impact .
If am gonna use catch dogs I like them coming two at a time at the hog.
