I have a dog thats around my feet, she gets out there about 50 yards and then right back to you...

Is it she needs more confidence to get out and track and bay her own hog? If so how is this accomplished?

I have heard of dogs that go right when let out of the dog box hit the woods and hunt hard (I like) ... How is this accomplished?

Its like she thinks her job is to hang around me until the others bay,  Thanks, all info. and opinions welcome...

Keep puttin' the dog in hogs... the rest will take care of itself...

Have a 4yo female similar to what you describe... cussed her from day one.. short range, just no desire to go out and find her own hog...

... heck of a help dog/RCD however... and that's why she lasted with me as long as she has...

4yo... and now she's finally decided to go out, find, and bay good hogs on her own...  You just never know man...

some dogs will be nothen more then a good me to help dog!!! but thats part of a pack in my eyes. i like a dog that will hang around with in a 100 yards that will honor a bay and help shut a hog down!!! cant tell u how many times we have had hogs break and head right at us and get shut down by those close me to help dogs. or even strike a hog on the way to a bay!!!!

I got a dog the same way , she is around 12 months
and was told she wouldn't get out and hunt , well not
anymore!!!  Shocked I put her in my kennel with one of my
good dogs and she ran with him for two hunts and the
the 3 one she was going out by her self even found a hog
last week and bayed hard yesterday on a boar!!! I had
Pretty good luck doing that with my dogs , I kennel them
Up together so they can follow each other, even put males
together in kennels . I got catch dogs together in kennels
right now!!!! The female came out of good stock , so that is
a plus too!!

Thomas she is somewhere between 10 months to a year

I cant lie she has came a long way for where she was... I think it will all happen in time hopefully.

So you just put the two dogs together and she started to follow, that would be cool but my buddys own the other dogs so I dont have a dog that she can bunk with... but thats a good idea may have to work somethin out with them

She's still perty young. Just stick with it, and keep working with her. She still has maturing to do and still far from her potential. JMO

How do you treat her when your not hunting?  Do you pet and play with her a lot?  If so, unfortunately you may have trained her to stay close.

I'm not big into the theory that dogs eventually learn to get out and burn the woods up.  I'm way more a believer that they're either born with it or their not, but even those that are born with the right stuff can be hindered.

Some dogs turn on later than others I have a 11 month old pup that has been hunting with the older dogs since he was 6 months old his full brother is just now starting to turn on now so just give her time and put her on more hogs

Well when I first got her she was shy so lots of petting and love is what she gets... She is still to her self alot she is usually off doin her own thing, what u say makes since... I figured that if u put ur all into ur dog  that they will return the favor I don't know I may have caused her to stay close she may just be to young idk. Thanks again for the input guys

You may try and put a lead rope on her and let the other dogs go hunt make her want to go but don't let her if she has a bad habit you can make her have the want to back if you do that for a couple of times and she act like she wants to go let her go if she takes of with the pack good deal if not she may not be what you are looking for only time will tell hope this helps you its worked in the past for me jmo try it let us no.  Wink

x2...A STAR IS BORN... and this is what I look for Smiley

But there are some late bloomers out there but just remember that the extremes we take to make a hunting dog is probably going to be passed on down the line, not all pups but at least a percentage will inherit the traits.

So if we want to improve the bloodline or strain we should strive to pick naturals if we are to consider breeding that dog at some point.

Yea I agree Im not to big on breeding dogs any ways I have been down that road before... good lookin dog but if she ant got it she wont be breed she may come around tho, that would be nice to just have a natural born
And how can I if I did unfortunately trained her to stay close by getting her to know me, change that back?

I'll occasionally give a dog a good, swift kick in the ass if he gets ta stayin' within' range...  Wink

... not sure if it helps 'em hunt better, but it keeps 'em away from me anyways!!  Grin

I got a dog that does the exact same thing and she just now kinda starting to figure out what she is suppose to be doing but this was her first full winter to hunt. shoot i didnt even get this dog to hunt but i was working my catchdog one day and she was barking like crazy so i said ok go play and i tossed her in the pen and she went to work. but i didnt think she would ever get out from under my feet but each hunt she started getting out furtherand further but it also helped that i ran her with long and medium range dogs. she still dont get out too far on her own but she will sure honor a bay and as soon as we get on a group she will run as long as it takes. i remember the day that she finally got out from under my ass and i didnt see her for like 45 minutes i was so happy i thought this is it she is bout to start getting good...she still hasn't found her own hog yet but ill be ok with it even if she never does cuz like others said before me i think a help dogs has a place in the pack. and as long as she is still in there at evey bay i will continue to take her.

i would just keep telling her to get on and kinda wave my hands at her and i never pet on her or anything while we were out. some are just late bloomers. the first few times i took her she just thought we were out on a nature walk. another thing is i mainly hunted her around the same dogs for a while until she got comforta ble sometimes when a new dog is around she will result back to her old ways but after about thirty minutes or so she starts getting out. just hang in there with the dog
