I know this has been talked about a hundred times, so I won't beat a dead horse, but I have a young gyp that is almost 7 months old and it's killing me not to start her in the woods.  I know everyone does it different and there is all kinds of ways to skin the cat, but I wanna hear about your experiences starting young dogs, mostly how old you started your young dog and if you had a bad experience and got the pup set back or if the pup just impressed the hell outta you and only got better with time.  There has to be one or a couple stories with some cobwebs on em that yall can share with me. With as many people and as much experience as on this board I'm looking forward to this helping me re-evaluate how I do some things.

I have a bmc that was a freebie. turned a half hobbled hog loose and he worked him over by hisself at 6 months old. first hog we got on bout a week later I had him out. he was under our feet til he heard the barking bout 250 yds out. he went in there and when we cut bulldogs and got in there he had a hold of the tail. I was like heck yeah. He hasn't slowed down a bit. has been well over a half mile with my older dogs and can't even work him in a pen cuz he'll just keep it bayed for a lil while then catch when he sees his chance. Lil sucker is only getting better.

Had a buddy that had a pup that he started early like that that was a crossed up dog and he was a bayin' fool. He took a shot at a young age and he had to work hard to get his confidence built back up but is still a dang good dog but he dang near quit.

IMO the BMC is a unique and one of a kind breed for sure. from starting work early to being dang near finished at 2 years old. It all depends on the breed and the individual dog from what I've seen in the past couple years of dogging and readin' posts. Just because one dogs starts early don't mean the rest of the litter will. very interesting and unique working with dogs that's why I enjoy the sport of hog dogging so much.

Just work with your dog and learn to read the way they are acting and proceed on with training. Playing it by ear with each individual dog.

I have a ybmc female That is 3 Years old now.   I got her when she was 3 months old she would bay the hell out of a hog in the pen it didnt matter was goin om around her she stayed focused on the hog.   At 5 months she would find hogs that was within a couple hundred yards on staged hunts.  At six months she would come off the hood and go all the way with the older dogs.  At 8 an 9 months she started beatn older dogs off the hood on the hogs that was closer.   But enough bout that  i took her becouse she was very mature for her age and very quick. She always payed attention and listened very well     I dont start dogs till they are ready wether it be 6 months or a year and a half.   It all depends on the dog
