Catchin hogs on the reg

On a recent hunt we got reminded that no catch vest is cut proof, no matter how much good press it gets on the internet.

Every vest that we have ever owned has managed to get punctured...including Ugly Dog, Larry Paris (P&P), Southern cross, kevlar, mutilayer kevlar, wet felt and combinations of each.  The only vest that was still intact was a month old vest from P&P....that was until a recent hunt.  Our dog took two pass thrus the double enforced chest area that got him good.  I'm absolutely not throwing mud on any one maker because I think they all make quality vest with quality materials.  The topic of which vest is best is regularly posted so I though this might be good to share.  They are all pretty good but they are not 100% of the time tools.  Find the vest from a quality outfit that allows your dog the most natural range of motion and let it rip. Just my .02.

Thinking about doing a test this evening to see which is most cut resistant.  Going to drop a knife from waist heigh and see if it passes through and how much.  I will post a video of my findings.

Here are some pics of the vests with their cut throughs.

But thats still a layer or two protection before it gets to your dog. Without the vest, that'd be pretty ugly. Be interesting to see your test results.

So I laid the three (P&P, Ugly dog 2 layer kevlar and Ugle dog 3 layer) vests out in my yard with the chest section facing up.  I dropped my hunting knife from about chest high.  I did this 5 times with each vest.

P&P- the knife passed through 3 times about 1/4-1/2 inch
Ugly Dog 2 Layer- the knife passed through 2 times about 1/4-1/2 an inch
Ugly Dog 3 Layer- NO PUNCTURES!

Hands down the top performer was the 3 layer Ugly Dog Titan vest.

I videoed all of it, I will post it up tomorrow when I get a chance to upload it.

I have seen the vest mbennet is talking about and no I don't know if a 223 would go through it lol just playing but it is one stout vest and never seen one yet that feels that stout and seen the holes where he tried to stab through it.  Wish larry still made them like that

Monte, I ordered it to be double re-enforced in the chest area over his normal catchdog vest.....which looking thru the cut means 6 layers.  The rib area is I guess 4 layers.  If 6 layers won't do it it won't work for me.  As is, the vest probably retains more body heat then either of the other vest.  Not a scientific fact, rather an observation we made after running it on about 10 hunts and seeing how hot the dogs got and the necessity to remove the vest to allow for proper cool down....not required with the other vest on the same hunts. This time of year I worry about heat as much as the hogs so I'm willing to go any thicker.

If you would like this on for a back up, I sell it to you for $50 (was 110 brand new).  I does has several cuts thru it though...two from a hog and several more from comparison testing.

Monty would you mind explaining how you make your vests please.. Ive been thinking of tryin this myself but i dont wanna do i half arse.  Found all the materials i would need on the net just not sure how to go about making the dang thing.  Kinda hit a road block, but would like to do some experimenting since two of my vests are shot (not literally  Wink)
