Feists for hog dogs?

I have these two feist dogs so I figured I would see what they would do on a pig. I put them in with a 90 lb. shoat and they bayed about 15 feet out the first time. The second time they bayed tight, and the third time I put them in they bayed for a minute and then caught out! Has anyone on here used a feist on hogs before? I know they are used as tree dogs but will they take a track? I was about to get rid of them but I may have to play with them a little more. They are some hunting little dudes too, they don't stay under your feet.

I have a female that loves a hog - she bays tight and bites when they run. I don't hunt her though she used to be my squirrel dog but is old now and has hip probs. But she hunts great im sure you can show them what you want and they will do it just like any other dog. my wifes toy poodle has found a hog b4 behind my house  - oh yeah she loves baying a hog too! LOL - ppl use patterdales and jadgs so whynot

A buddy of mine has a Mullins feist that is a bad to the bone squirrel dog. It will also bay a hog and is a pretty good hog dog.

a guy from here in town where i live has several mullins feist for squriel and tuened one into hog dog     never hunted with it but said he stays busy and i seen a really good hog that he bayed and held alone till they got in and shot it    his only problem is u can't road him   he got ran over by wheeler as pup so he stays behind       guy said he can work a hot track but not like a cur

Its not the size of the dog its the amount of game in the dog, rat terriers, fiests, are dead game.  Where do you think pit bull terriers got there gameness???  From the terrier not the deadheaded ol english bulldog for sure.  I used to hunt 20 of time at a time on javelina and hogs in the 70's, they will strike and bay just like any other hot nosed type cur breed.  They are way smart and very easy to handle as a rule, lots of times if you hunt one as a single dog the hog will chase the dog especially if its a sow with lil piglets, several of the ranches down here used the rat terriers for hogs when they first started getting really thick.  When you hunt them in a large pack some will bay and some will catch after the first dog gets there, pretty kewl to see 20 terriers lock up a big boar like ticks behind each leg.  Bad thing is when they get hurt it is usually the end, i have a few 35 pound terriers still but they are on climbing game.  I will shoot at hogs running off from the cattle pens or the self feeders and dump them in after them but not hunting them off the mule yet, leg is still not healed all of the way up.  Back in the day bobcats were the thing to run and catch foxhound style for the race and the money, cat hides and coon hides brought top dollar, I used to dump my terriers into the foxhound race to cut it short and go on to the next bobcat, the terrriers will cut the line and catch vs running the line like a hound, plus if in a whitebrush or cactus patch 6 foot tall they will get to a bobcat faster than a larger hound, nuther thing for them is they will tree and stay vs most foxhounds that wont stay very long around a cat up.  I like that red fiest you got in the trailer, worm em up and feed em and hunt his awrse off, they will strike off of a rig f trained as well.   Good luck, what did you ever do with those dogs, did they hunt or what???

Levi, here's a pic of my Belle dog, she's half fiest and half cur (what kind of cur I don't know) I would assume maybe a Catahoula since she has one blue eye. She's without a doubt the smartest dog as far as IQ goes that I've ever had or seen. She's the best hog dog I've ever had and may be the best I'll ever have. She's silent unless she's looking at a hog or it breaks, then she yips a bit. Has a heck of a nose on her and can read a hog like no other dog I've had. Buddy of mine got 4 pups from an older gent down in GA, she's the only one left, 2 came up missing and one died outright. He can't remember the guy's name or where he was from....wish I had more just like her. Hunts hard and can move a track, she's fast and not too catchy unless she thinks she can handle it. Last year she developed a bad case of endometriosis and I had to have her spayed. I wouldn't hesitate to breed your fiests to a cur or hound. Heck,....they would probably run a hog by themselves if they had a chance. That fiest blood just adds something special to a cross if you ask me.

Thanks for the replies guys, I really like the little dogs. As for what I have done with them ya'll know as much about them as I do. A friend of mine called me up and said they were hanging around one of his pastures and chasing his cows for several days. He said come and get them cause I don't want them and they are starving. I think when corn season gets here they will be good for hunting the standing corn. We will see, I'll let ya'll know how they do.

Hey Dane,  he can work a track bout like a hot/med. nose cur dog, but doesn't work a track like a hound. He's the 10mo old pup baying a good boar on the video forum I posted.  Denny has him bred to an English gyp that should be dropping pups next week.  We have pretty good luck using Mullins Fiest on hogs, but we're experimenting right now trying to get something with a little more leg and range.

FIREMEDIC, your Bella dog  I'm pretty sure is a florida cur x cross, buddy of mine has a gyp that looks just like her.

Thanks curdogs,....I really have no idea other than what the guy I got her from told me. He hunts with us some down in GA where they live. Man I wish he could remember the older guys name that he got her from.....I'd love to find out more about her background and if he had any more of them.

I hunt my Mullins feist "Trouble"  for hogs and have had good luck with him. He is the dog in the video mason posted earlier this year "South Arkansas Boar 3-12-11". He will find his own hog but didn't have the range I was wanting, although he was only 10 months when he found his first hog. He is now 14 months old and his range has expanded. I have since picked up a English redtick I use as my lead strike dog with my Mullins she has more nose and range. That being said my Mullins will still strike ahead of my redtick from time to time. I can't say enough about the brains and game drive these feist dogs have. Although these aren't your little feist some might think my male dogs are generally 19" and solid 30lbs. Denny

the mtn feist is a cross with mullins feist and kemmer mtn cur. I hear they are good hunting dogs.

I feel that if a dog loves and hunts squirrel it will go crazy over a hog...Like knightStockTerrier says it is not the size of the dog but the gaminess in it but of course the dog needs to have the tools to get the job done.

Chelcee, that is Spud, and I know, everyone wants him. Lol Yes, I have hunted them some, just been so hot I haven't been much. They stay very busy but don't have a lot of range, about 200 yd. They have worked really well in the thick stuff, they will get in there and root around until they find what they smell. I have had them in a baypen too and they will blow up on one.

Yeah Levi I can vouch for you there they sure aren't afraid to get a mouth full of pork. I'm glad they were there the other morning or else we would had a heck of a time getting that hog caught
