I need some help figuring if I need to bring this new dog to the vet....I bought a dog, I've had him on my yard for about 4 weeks and he has a hacking cough. He'll get excited and start coughing and then acts like he is hacking up a fur ball, I'm hoping it's not heart worms but wanted to get some of y'alls ideas what it might be and what I might do about it...any ideas...he acts healthy besides the cough, very hyper jump around when I go out back..he doesn't do it in the field hunting, I'm wondering if it just the collar but it's loose, he doesn't try to get loose from his chain...got my baffled, if he did it all the time I would think kennel cough or heart worms....feed back needed....

I think you should definitely have him tested for heart worms, I hate to say it but those were my Gators exact symptoms starting a couple months before I lost him.
BTW I'm the guy with the blue horse trailer who bought all those shoats from you a while back. We barred every male and they're getting huge already.
Good luck with your dog, hopefully its nothin' major.

Good to hear those pigs are growing into hogs...watch the teeth, there are some buck tooth hogs on the property those came from yeah I was thinking it's heart worms but he doesn't do the hacking in the field..I guess it's vet time again ..he's a good lil gritty sucker..I hate to lose him, if that's what it is... I feed diamond sport dog, don't know what the guy I got him from was feeding...

I've got a dog almost the same way, he started coughing when I got him...... 6 months ago. I took him to the vet twice as I thought it was heart worms too but he was heart worm negative, doc said it could be similiar to a kennel cough and gave him a round of anti biotics, it helped for about a month and back again, second trip to the vet he gave him a shot (it was bad this time, more than when he just got excited) and that really helped but to this day he still will "hack" when he's excited on the chain. I've even switched from Diamond to Victor food with no luck. So if you figure out what it is for your dog I'd like to hear.

if its kennel cough you should take him inside out of the dust and dirt its so dry its making it hard for him to breath. I would recommend a humidifyer in a small room, or if someone takes a shower leave him in the bathroom it will ease his cough as a temp

mine does the same, but it didnt start until he was hit by a truck. actually he ran into the truck at full speed, started coughing up blood and everything. took him to the vet, and checked out fine, seems he only coughs when hes excited or been working all day

Critter Catcher, If your dog is heart worm free and its not true kennel cough, there is a chance that this cough is related to high of a protein % in your dog food. You can find out real fast by changing his diet for one week. You can feed him plain corn bread and red beans ( high carbs-low protein), I know this sounds a little strange but it comes from my old consulting DVM who practiced for 45 years. He found this condition to be more prevalent than most Vets think. This type of dog can't metabolize all the protein and the first sign is the cough. In bad cases it will progress to Seizures. I had one dog that was to the seizure stage and I fixed her in 4 days with the beans and corn bread, I could not believe it, haha. You might give it a try, just so you know and its also a great reason to cook beans and corn bread for yourself This disorder is the most prevalent in high strung hunting or working dogs and has to do with liver function. Good luck, Paul T

Thanks gentlemen I appreciate the feed back... step 1 get him checked for heart worms-can't hurt step 2 if kennel cough go to TSC and get meds step 3 if all else fails change diet for a week or so
I would have never figured diet would have given him a cough but it makes since, allergies or immune system could trigger almost anything..thanks again..
