I have to say that yall can come up with some pretty good excuses for why a dog will trash on something.  Cheesy  Im a realist, I think that any dog that has good prey drive will naturally go after other animals besides a hog but if it still produces hogs then so be it.  Grin They can be trash broken but I would choose what to break them off of carefully. Like cattle and deer. JMO

AMEN...A dog knows the difference between a dillo and a hog...
Another popular excuse, "too much scent on the ground". The reasons for too much scent on the ground and not finding a pig are several.

1. dog is not a real good strike dog
2. dog doesn't know how to straighten out a track
3. handler doesn't guide the dog correctly (young dog)
4. dog doesn't have a nose
5. dog just doesn't have it between the ears

Training dogs is not about quantity, it's more about timing, the right situations, and proper guidance...After that it's up to the dog...

Well they did not trash any this weekend. Caught a 100 lb sow friday evening, and 150 lb boar saturday morning. Dogs worked good we were not in the woods 10 minutes when the got bayed both times. We also got on about a 200 to 250 lb sow but she got away from us and took the catch dog for a swim. All in all great weekend, and the are great dogs.  Grin Pictures to come when I figure out how to upload them.

Lack of preferred game is what causes most dogs to trash. My grand paw (Puz) had a dog(Blackie) that was used only for the Hull Hog. Me and brother and army shovel dug up all that made it home. Blackie rolled most with nose and got him some belly.

I was once told by an old hunter that had been running dogs after various game all his life that at some point or another a hog dog will get a dilla. He claimed that they smelled alike. I never minded it as long as they did not bay it.

Also like somebody said I had a lacy gyp that was hell on wheels as a strike dog, but she had to kill a skunk before she would hunt. Got so bad we would stop on the road to let her kill one before we got to the place we were going to hunt so she would start hunting right away lol.

Every dog has their quirks, but as long as they make you happy and do what you want then why bother about what others think. Just my 2 cents lol.

my dogs are completely trash broke and in my opinion if they dont smell a dilo track they aint no hog dog i would have. dilos smell just like a hog eat same food source and make similar gruntin noise. the only thing u have to worry about is when it is in site not to bark or catch. Stay with it im sure ure dogs will be fine. good luck

I appreciate the feedback. The guy we were hunting with is telling me that they are crap and that I should take them back, but other than that they worked hard and I was proud of them worked harder than the other dogs with us at least. Just gonna make sure to go where I know theres pigs next time so I can really see them work.
i hate to say it brandon but i just read this kinda tickled me pink sayin they worked harder than any dogs both dogs i took were gone the whole time on somethin never worked it out but they were gone urs brought back two dillos my dogs did not bring back nothin but were gone hunting and when they left they left on the same trail we saw them pig track i honestly think since were giving real opinions them two hogs yall caught were seen at night and yall found them dont down someone that has never downed yours ya i mess with micheal he cries but i dont cuz them two dogs got drive and hunted short range but they did not work better that day sorry bud i think ur letting micheal rub off on you cuz that big sow we caught last week was sis's first hog to find but she has always done quite a bit of hunting and she is a full blood pit

I never really had a hog dog mess with armadillos but I won't hunt a dog that's trashy, and I don't see how it can be excusable to have a dog that "mostly hunts hogs"?? And huntin dillos or anything else is ok long as they are huntin??? Lol I'm speechless, if it's a yr old or less I can allow them to trash a little and will put a stop to is pretty quick, but if I bought a dog that was a hog dog and it bayed armadillos I'd take it back even if I paid 10$ for it...if it did it once it'll likely do it again. I go huntin to catch hogs, anything else is just unacceptable, even if they are good hog dogs but just trash when their bored. I hope my opinion doesn't offend anyone I'm just shocked is all... When I'm huntin me and my dogs are strictly business and I figured more people took hog huntin more seriously than to excuse a trashy dog. Like I said it's just my opinion and I take owning good dogs seriously so please take no offense Smiley

Im not offended at all. Everyone has different expectations for their dogs. We have a pretty high percentage when it comes to catching hogs. My dog go out hunting for hogs, thats what they are looking for but if they come across a varmit they are gonna get it. But I don't take hog hunting serious, Im just there to have fun and if my dogs trash on a skunk and then 10 minutes later they get a hog, Im still having fun. I am a type B personality, which basically means that I go with the flow and don't worry much about the details along the way.  Smiley

I agree Waylon. As long as a young dog has the hunt im not going to get frustrated with a little trash. There's plenty of time to learn what they are supposed to be running.

I dont want to drag anyone into this so i wont name names, but i went out last night with another member from the board and after about three hours of making a dry run one of my dogs started baying a dilla in a hole. Our whole group went to the bay and I moved a fallin tree and started helping them dig. we pulled it out for the kids to see and the kids thought it was neat.  I hope this dont mean that i am trashy Grin
