What is a break stick? Where do I get one? I get it is used to break the CD off but how?

Wedged stick made of teflon or wood used to wedge open their mouth. Used right you shouldn't harm the teeth. Wild Boar USA has them I believe.

You can make them your self out of thick teflon/plastic (cutting board material) just cut it and shape it smooth so it isn't rough when run through the dogs mouth.

I got some scrap .095 wall 1/2 tube at work I wonder if a piece of that a foot long or so would work. The I.d. is prolly only bout an 1/8 inch

Get you a hickory hammer handle from hardware store . Plane it down to form a wedge.

Exactly .....blank them out to 2" on the table saw and cut the angles with the band or table saw then shape with your belt sander.

Do the break sticks really work. My hunting buddy is thinking about getting one for his catch dog. But from what I  have read they are kind of unreliable.

only as un-reliable as the operator haha. I mean there's nothing to the break stick to "fail" it's just how you use it. I try to ease mine all the way across the dogs mouth then pry.

I cut mine out of a plastic barrell. Those 30 or 55 gallon barrells.
