Just curious.
How deep do your dogs hunt?
All my older dogs and now my young dogs seem to be ranging out to 800 - 1200 yards and in some cases even more. They will hunt short , med for a while if the hogs are there if not it gets real deep in a hurry. This is a good thing but then again it is a pain in the ass at other times when you are trying to hunt shorter land . Ain't figured out what am going to do about this . Boy this is something to be trying to figure out ain't it most the time its the other way around people trying to figure out how to make a dog get out further well my problem is just the opposite .
The only shorter closer hunter I have is my Lacy gyp 100 - 500.
It seems like to me the land these days is getting shorter and shorter .
Anybody having my kind of problem here?

I've got two that range average 1200-1500 yards, and 3 that average 300-500... The longer rance ones are a pain alot of times, if I'm on small acreage or wanna b quick I take the 3 mid range dogs and their rough I don't take a catch dog, if I'm on large property and ain't in a hurry I take the two rangy ones and a catch dog... I'm always wore out and cussin em before I leave the woods but on the other hand they won't ever change owners

when i went out a buddy ran 2 lacy/hound dogs that were i say 300 to 500 and my rcds were 100 to 500 and walked catch dogs
my suggestion is take a short range and let loose first and let it find any pigs in the small area, if not let the ranged ones do the work and maybe they wont go to far, they just got good drive thats all

Thats the reason i wanted curs, I got tired of spendin all my time lookin for dogs. But i still havnt found what im lookin for, 300 - 500 yds would be ideal for me. 800- 1000 too far, unless they run one that far, i dont want them huntin out that far. My hounds will go til they find one, they dont have a shut off limit. The curs i have so far are 200 yd dogs, wich i like sometimes, gonna try the hound cur cross, and try to get a happy medium. Cause i havnt found any curs to suit me or i would just use them.

Yeah its pretty tuff to get them just right. 1000-1200 yds is really to far then if the hog runs it turns in to a lot lot futher. 400-500 would be perfect but tuff to put your finger on and hold it down to that.

I like a shorter range dog. My dogs hunt out between 100 and 500 yards. I like to see my dogs working and where there at. I dont want to be lokking at the garmin the whole hunt! I dont hunt places big enough to run dogs that hunt out 1200 yards or 2 miles. If i had dogs that went that far hunting they would stay in the pens and i would be looking for different dogs! JMO

Our dogs typically range out in 700 to 900yrd loops to find a hog before returning to us to load up and drive a little further. But they will go for miles if they find a hog and it takes off. The property that we hunt is several miles across but sometimes we do have to get ahead of them and cut them off before they go somewhere they aren't supposed to be. Thank goodness for Garmin.
Our yard dog is a dog that we don't hunt because he is too short range for our style of hunting but I will keep him around in case we ever get to go hunt a small property.

My ole dog is long range and has tons of bottom he will stick with a hog for hours. i dont mind it i will turn him out and hunt with some shorter range dogs and when he bays i will go to him.

this was exactly my problem when I got out in 2007. Now I am having problems getting some good dogs. my plan is to just get dogs of this same type but to put more teeth on a hog... I don't like loose baying dogs that will never put a tooth on a running hog, I don't like a short range dog and I can't stand a dog that quits a hog or a hog track...

My dogs used to hunt about 300 yards out, one died and I got a female that really ranged out. now my 2 dogs Male and female just vanish and I don't have a garmin but when I have had them bay it is usually around 800 yards away so I wish I knew. If the 800 yards is right that would be about perfect for me. Anymore is to much and any less makes me mad, they do make extra large circles and I am more interested in that, the style than just range. I don't want a dog that blows out and makes a straight line.

Mine stay within 100 yards sometimes a little more out in front of the wheeler and go however far it takes when they strike a hog. I catch hogs and am satisfied with them. I would rather have casting dogs that make 500 yards or more loops but long as i am catching hogs with them thats all that matters for now! have had a couple that would go a mile or so hunting and thats too aggravating for me i got rid of them. don't like hunting dogs instead of hogs! LOL

I have what i consider short range dogs. They hunt/"range" out 300-500 yards and that's the range they stay busy at-making circles and checking in. Anything over that and they are on a track. If the garmin shows anything over 500 yards than it's a pretty safe bet they are on a hog, and I no longer consider them hunting/ranging. I think longe range is sometimes confused with lots of bottom.

yep, these are good dogs. another thing, a friend of mine was talking about dogs that hunt hard but miss a lot of hogs... He called these bush beaters. I have seen a few of these and I suspect some folks confuse these type of dogs as good hunting dogs because they are always busy. I like a pack of dogs when they are free casted in the woods, if they come back in 15 minutes you can bet there are no hogs in the area. If you don't see a dog in 15 minutes you better pull the track and check the pack. If all or together they are bayed or tracking. Check in 2 more minutes and if not moving they are bayed or have one caught... and it is time to get to the bay.

I consider their "range" as how far they hunt out tryn to find a track or sign! JMO
