After about 4 weeks the pup's are mostly gettin water anyway. Just keep them goin on the puppy food and they'll make it.

Wrangler Curs- I understand you start pups around 4-5 wks old on soft, wet dog food, but where do you get your info on ..at 4 wks old its mostly milk???

Shoot I start them as early as possible on food keeps momma dog happy.  You should do just fine just get their first puppy shot this week tell vet the gyp dried up and need the shot for them.  My gyp kicked them mostly off at 5 weeks she started though when they were just 4 though.

Im feeding them high pro puppy food soaked with a milk replacer and they are doing pretty good, got their 5 way shots in the fridge just waiting for them to hit 5 weeks old to give them to them. I dont know if we will breed that female again because she is very very protective of her puppies and refuses to eat because she is constantly feeding them and at about 4 weeks she weaned them

I haven't had a female yet that didn't start weaning pups at four weeks. I haven't had any problems yet.

I wouldn't let that stop me from breeding her if the pups turn out to be good dogs.

WranglerCurs- I was just curious.  I had a pitbull female that from about 4wks-6wks old her pups would grow like crazy!! Also I was not feeding the pups anything because the female had more than enough milk and lost absolutely no weight.  That is why I was asking.

I start weening pups at 3 weeks and know plenty of breeder friends that do the same. I've never seen a problem with it.

As soon as my pup's eyes are open and the can toddle about pretty good, I soak their feed in canned milks and then run it thru a blender. Pour it on a cookie sheet and set all of them in it. They start smacking at it right away. Usually wind up with more on em than in em, but momma licks em clean. Within a week they are eating good twice a day.

It will be the same with all these pups except I'll be using the milk replacer instead of canned milk.

After 3-4 weeks, it is more important for the pups to be together to socialize with one another as dogs than it is to nurse, as long as they are eating well.
