i was wondering if us dog hunters at the end of the year end up with more pigs than the gun hunters do at the end of the year? i was on another hunting web site and its all gun hunting and it just got me to thinking . out of all of us and out of all gun hunters who would have more?

I know here in Florida on state land management area hunts there is no comparison. The dog hunters bag much more than the still hunters.

Just a guess and I could b way off on it but I would think dog hunters got alot more hogs than gun or bow hunters

well theres only a few of us doggers in the panhandle but i feel confident in saying my year round hunting puts there half a year to shame... most of them also end up calling me to go on a hunt  |

By sheer percentage of population id say gun hunters may edge us out a bit, but, at the individual level its no contest. I don't know many gun hunters who stackem up past maybe 30 in a year.

No question about it in my opinion Monty. Dog hunters take more hogs than all other methods combined. That includes helicopters and trapping.

Gotta agree with u after thinking about it more. I think depending on what region of Texas or of the country your in dog hunters outweigh it considerably... Especially on an individual level... Average 100 hogs a year which is roughly 2 per week... Not many gun hunters kill 100 hogs per year

It's a no brainer...
The first day the still hunters would kill more but no trophy boars.
The second day and there after it goes to the hunters with dogs...and they get all the trophy boars.

Gun hunters out number dog hunters at least 50 to one. Most likely double that. I think gun hunters kill more per year based on people out hunting. But on one given property I think dog hunters will kill more then if gun hunters were the only ones hunting.

CCan't speak for every part of Texas but up here where I live dog hunters catch more hogs. And there's not as many dog hunters as there are in other areas.

When we were younger we would hunt hogs with guns while cruzing the farms with a spotlight and I can tell you, we have harvested more hogs with our dogs. If someone were still hunting, I would think they would kill less hogs because hogs travel and dont always stay in the same area, so what would be the odds of seeing a hog every time you sat and waited. The dogs go find them, even when they are bedded down.

I have run into a LOT of people in the woods that were gun hunting and hadn't seen a hog and bay a hog up within 100 yards of them. No doubt in my mind dogs are more effective. They get the ones that are bedded down for the day.

Also gotta consider that alot of dog hunters don't kill the hogs, such as myself, so throwing that factor in mite even it up a bit more but most likely dog hunters kill more. And have alot more fun |

I dont know where that puts you Charles but judging from your figures, your numbers go way down when you put the dogs up. |

On average most folks around here catch 3-4 aweek and some alot more...so say 15 a month, times 9 months of dog huntin(excluding deer season) that's 135 hogs a year(average) some more some less. I know alot of deer hunters and deer hunt myself, and I know nobody that has killed 135 hogs with a gun or bow in a single year. As far as the actual question goes dog hunters get more than gun hunters... I don't consider shooting them out of helicopters or trapping them as (gun hunting) so can't include those figures... I've seen 100+ hogs slaughtered out of a helicopter in 3hrs... It's effective and necessary in some farm regions even tho I think it's a waste. And at one time I was trapping and removing 40+ hogs a week from the same farms, mass eradication attempts are not (gun hunting) far as I'm concerned but if they are included as methods in this figure then by far more are taken that way than by dogs. But the question of dog hunters vs gun hunters on a sporting level, dog huntin beats them hands down no doubt |

How about another wrench in the works.. I hunt pigs with guns, dogs, bow, (and anything else im asked to do if it means i get to hunt). For the past year ive had 3 four different places to go and now im down to 3. Of the 3 one is gun ONLY (place is too small for dogs and the neighbors dont want me on their place, another i just talked the guy into lettin me run dogs (after he saw the wouldnt mess with cows) so we been gun huntin it for a year, the third I been hunting hard for about 6 months and they all been dry runs. So that bein said i kill more with a bullet than with the dogs. Now go back a few years when i had good places to run dogs i would only kill a few a month on my gun only place (just to keep my uncle happy and not let anyone else on there) and catch a butt load in the orange groves.. Did i screw up the statistics?? |
