Can this be done? How would you do it?
I just got a bulldog. He has never seen a hog. The dog is two years old. Can he be trained as a catch dog? How would I go about getting him started? Thanks alot for any input.

I tied him on the outside of my hog pen and let a younger dog bay. He didnt want any part of this. I put him on the inside with the bay dog. He ran to the corner of the pen and layed down. He shows no sign of wanting to work. Should I go ahead an get something else? Thanks

try putting him in the pen with another dog that catches to make the pig squeil if that dont work put him in a pen with a lil bigger pig that will run after him if that dont work find another one

Thanks for the reply's. Ill try a couple more times an if he dont turn on ill get rid of him. Im just hard up for a dang catch dog an dont have the money to buy one right now. Thanks again

He ain't too old, let one rough him up a bit and get him fired up he ought to catch but if not better replace him probably. I'm still looking for one out in that area no luck yet tho

This is just me but I want a cd to have drive. Again this is just me but in my eyes I look at a cd the same way I look at a bay/find dog they eather have it or they don't. I do not force a cd there are too many for free or cheap cheap on craigslist. I know you can make a cd by putting them with a rank pig and making them catch but that is not the cd for me I want the drive the same as a bay dog.

This is just me but I want a cd to have drive. Again this is just me but in my eyes I look at a cd the same way I look at a bay/find dog they eather have it or they don't. I would get him used to the other dogs, then lead him in on a bay when your out hunting. Make sure your other catchdogs are there because he might not do anything and then you could be in a pickle.

i got my bulldog round 2 years old, he got his tail bit and his arse torn up and he hated pigs after that, took him alittle while cause he didnt know what to do just get a rank hog and let it after him just vest him up just incase  |

had one that was almost 2 years old. sent him into the bay on about a hundred pounder and it was kinda funny to see a 90 lb bulldog bay a hog until he got thrown around a lil bit. he learned to catch pretty quick after that lil deal. need one to ruff em up that won't tear them up or move on.

How long have you had the dog? Let the dog get used to you and your dogs. Don't let him get roughed up by a pig, he may not ever turn on if you let him get hurt/roughed up right now. Does he show.any interest in anything else? What does he do when the pig squeals? Sometimes a dog is timid and needs a lot of reinforcement from their handler letting them know that getting the pig is what you want and once their confidence is up.their natural drive will show. I have owned alot of bulldog and have seen some that did not "turn on" til they were three or so. Patience is the key to getting this dog to work for you in this situation. There will be a lot of people on this board that will tell you to just cull him and be done but if you have the time to wait give him a chance. There are a lot of different things that could cause him to be nervous and not want to get in there and catch. How many times has the dog changed hands? How was he treated where he came from? Was he just a "pet" at the place where he came from? Etc. Some dogs never turn on and some just take a little patience. You are starting with a two year old that you didn't raise so it may take a little while.

" natural drive " and "confidence " are the same in my book . if the dog is 2 and dont catch when the hog hits him , he dont eat at my house anymore .
