Catch dog question

Jdt, I don't understand how natural drive and confidence are the same thing. They go hand in hand but are not the same thing. I am sure glad you are not one of the oldtime bulldog men. Some of the foundation stock that started some of the best pitbull bloodlines didn't turn on til well after two. The oldtimers didn't do anything with their dogs til they were at least 18 months old and usually they waited til they were two.

How long have you had the dog? Let the dog get used to you and your dogs. Don't let him get roughed up by a pig, he may not ever turn on if you let him get hurt/roughed up right now. Does he show.any interest in anything else? What does he do when the pig squeals? Sometimes a dog is timid and needs a lot of reinforcement from their handler letting them know that getting the pig is what you want and once their confidence is up.their natural drive will show. I have owned alot of bulldog and have seen some that did not "turn on" til they were three or so. Patience is the key to getting this dog to work for you in this situation. There will be a lot of people on this board that will tell you to just cull him and be done but if you have the time to wait give him a chance. There are a lot of different things that could cause him to be nervous and not want to get in there and catch. How many times has the dog changed hands? How was he treated where he came from? Was he just a "pet" at the place where he came from? Etc. Some dogs never turn on
and some just take a little patience. You are starting with a two year old that you didn't raise so it may take
 a little while.


Yes all these factors are true to some extent but it's not a 10mth old puppy, it's a grown dog, if he won't show any interest after Bein roughed up a bit by a hog a few times then he probably is gonna require more patience and time than it's worth and need to just get another one. All dogs can't b expected to have prey drive and attack everything u put it on... I personally wouldn't own a dog that mite catch anything it's around at 2yrs old that Is dangerous, and harder to break from catching anything to catching just hogs. He's not too old but needs to be shown his job and get run over a few times by a hog that ain't gonna hurt him and if he is still scared and don't show interest then Mayb try another dog and get rid of him... Don't give up too soon but don't waste too much time.. Bulldogs have that prey drive some just don't show the aggression as easily as others.

I havent had the dog long at all. But I dont think that he's going to work out. I just picked up another younger dog yesterday. I am goin to give him a week are so just gettin used to me and the place then Ill try him on a pig. This new pup was sick yea when I got him home yesterday so I loaded him up this mornin an took him to town. When I got back home he didnt as bad as yesterday but still alittle sickly.lol Ill work on this while Im givin him time to get used to me and the farm.

Good luck, found u a cd but it was very dog aggressive so I did not get him.
