Has anybody ever tried to break there dogs off javalina we have been debating doing it. We have alot of country with hogs that we don't hunt because of them. A javalina is in the k-9 family and smell totally different to me when you walk up on them so you would think you could break them. Them sob will wreck a pack of dogs. I was just wanting yalls thoughts.

Heck yeah, i break mine off at an early age cus like you said they can really work a dog over!  I usually catch one in a trap and use him for  just that. We have a ton of them down here in S. Tex. I've seen dogs cut up more from a Javi then a big 300# boar.

Not k9 they are actually members of the peccary family, a group of hoofed mammals originating from South America. They will put a wooping on dogs because they can turn their necks. But a dog that does not trash will not trash on them. They only look alike and do not smell alike. But dilla dogs or skunks dogs may give them a try.

I have a dog get poked by one on his cheek, his face swelled up bigger than any cut from a hog.  They got some nasty chit in their saliva I think.

I know this has nothing to do with your question and there was another thread about this before ,but  my dad hunted javalina with dogs for nearly 25 yrs and says that theyre not really as bad as everyone makes it seem, a hog is alot worser on a dog than a javalina, now dnt get me wrong if you have a suicidal dog that gets in there and tries to catch rite away he is gonna get killed or hurt real bad.. he never lost a dog to a javalina or never really got one hurt real bad, even thou he did hear bout a few of his buddies loosin a few dogs to them but it was usually cuz  they were bayed in a bad spot. he wouldnt use catchdogs ,he would shoot over his dogs ,but he says that many times the dogs had already killed them by the time he got there.he would usually run 5 walker hounds.

Same thing happened to my bulldog his neck got really swollen. I hunt around beeville and goliad there's a lot of them but don't run into them much. The very first time we did it tore some dogs up and mostly on the back end of the dog hind legs and azz.

Javilinas are like fleas in some places, if they catch a coon dog or bird dog thats no smart and broke off of them or trys to fight them they will be shredded, they are pretty bad about getting in pack and cutting down a dog at  a tree barking at a coon.  Lots of bobcat races used to get busted up by them when they get pissed off about dogs barking at somehing in there neighberhood.  Way to hunt them is with loose baying hounds that stay back but put pressure on them enuff to make them den up in  a hole or cave or tinhorn or cactus room, we used to shoot every one in the pack and give them away to the hands to eat.  Cur dog that catches or any dog that trys to bite one is going to get screwed up bad, they can bend like a raccon and turn those dirty nasty cactus eating tusks into a dog, anywhere they bite a dog its usually a infection and hell to get healed up.  We used to have thousands of them where i live at one time, so much land has been cleared and deer hunters just shoot them and let them lay because they ate corn in the road they tossed for deer big time.  Outfitters on ranches got rich letting city boy bowhutners shoot them for $250 each because they are easy and blind when baited, not too many around in this area any more.  Just get a tritronics and break them off if they are starting them, easy to do, bait up a sendero and get some in it and dump trashing dogs out and shock them if they try to start them in the road.  I used to have a seperate pack just for them,  back them in the day javlians dogs would not run a big hog, now its the oppisitelol  There in the deer family i thought last time i looked.  Wish i had a dollar for every dog cut i had to wash out with a water hose 4 tiems a day trying to get it to heal when we had tons of them and i was just starting to try to hunt with catch dogs, big mistake to take catch dogs into a javalina bay, they will cut them in the neck every time seems like.

I use to Hunt alot at my ranch in south Texas and javelinas stink and are nastier than a hog I think and will deffinately wear a dog out... More like a pack of coyotes than a herd of hogs, not scared of the dogs and don't run off they just wad up and fight and are more athletic... Seem to have a distinctive smell so I'm sure they could b broke off of them but I wouldn't know how to do it... Probably be takin a chance of breaking them off hogs too at the same time. Jmo

I think there is a sharp learning curve for dogs and javalina. Yes they poke more than cut. They do not have the sharp edge. But if a dog can learn mountain lions they can learn javalina.
