I do agree on pits having a low cull rate. I bought my first 2 on color and was wanting pets. Got into hog hunting and they have been catching machines. Pups turned out great. Picked them up from the pound and got the free ones that have all turned out except for one that was dumped on me. But until you put a hog in front of them it's 50/50  Wink

Id start with 100#+ hog if hes 5yrs old get something that will give him a fight and trigger his instinct to grab ahold of it, proves nothing that a dog can catch and kill a small pig and if a bigger hog roughs him up and makes him a cull then he is a cull to begin with if a 100# hog is too much for him at that age...although I've Rarely seen a bulldog of any age that wouldn't catch when cornered eventually

JMHO but a 5 year old dog is old enough to put on any size pig. If he stops because he gets roughed up then he wasn't worth feeding. At five years old he is mentally and physically matured and he has his mind made up if he is gonna stop or not.

yes i bet thats true but i think it is because they were being culled hard befor they were ever a catch dog and because alot of people dont cull like they need to they "make it work" because hes big or a good looking dog to tell the truth i have culled ALOT more pits than any other dogs and one of my best catch dogs was a 7 year old cur dog and he was killed by my best pit in the first fight the pit ever got in and his last

Untill last week I'd have said a pit will catch on prey drive and instinct alone.....I learned different, we had dogs baying awsome on 130lb. turn in a new pit, a real well bred, paperd dog, she hit the water hard, never even looked at the bayed hog as she walked by him...my little pit mix 22lb. snuck in and hit like a missile, really too bad she has a hummingbird hind end. LMAO Never thought I'd say it but not every pit will catch

Hogdoggintexas, maybe you had to cull so many because you were getting junk. I also don't understand why you would cull one just because he got into one fight. Dog fights happen, it is part of it. If it is a continuous problem then ok, but once, really. Just something that I have noticed is that people cull for some bs reasons and don't cull for reasons that they should.

I train a lot of dogs and if he has never seen a hog don't think that he's going to act like a 5 year old cd so try to start small then work your way up if the pig is to big he my become a bay dog our start barking before he catches!

If a 100lb hog can make a five year old pitbull back up and bay or start barking before he catches then the dog isn't worth the feed he is eating. I have a five year old that has never caught a pig and I will gurantee him to catch, he may not catch properly but he WILL NOT bark or bay!
