Cward,....had a guy from TN that was hunting with one of my friends a couple of years ago and they bayed a big bear, it was working on the dogs and my buddy told the guy to shoot it quick,....he was trying to get dogs out and finally looked for the guy when he didn't shoot,...low and behold he's come out with a rope and is building a loop to rope it, needless to say my buddy shot the bear. The guy got all tore up because he didn't get to rope it, said, like you, that it was something he's always wanted to do. My buddy then asked him what I'm wondering as well,....when you get it roped.....what are you gonna do with it then?

The horse would probably fair better if you kicked him out of the back of the trailer at about 70mph haha.  From what I have seen on TV the comparison to a coon is dead on, they can twist and contort in ways yuo cant imagine.  I imagine they could ruin a dog quick.  In that country where the game cam picture was taken a tree of any size is few and FAR between.  When he stopped to fight it would get ugly quick.  I know of of one near Tilden that the mans dogs wouldn't even mess with, smartes move those dogs ever made.

Chance,

Bo said when you're ready, bring your horse out.  He'd get you in the situation of your life.

My advise is pay your life insurance up.  Rowdy needs a new pair of boots.  LOL

I wish no harm on you, but I'd love to video that stuff.  When you're ready, just let me know.  If anyone out there has an honest shot at pulling it off, it would be you.  Talk about some hits on YOUTUBE.   Grin

I gotta be there for that. I'll bring my 30-30. I read a book when I was a kid that was a collection of letters from Texas Rangers during the plains wars and manifest destiny and several rangers claimed to have roped black bear in northeast Texas. My cousin who used to be the game manager at a northeast TX  ranch that I can't spell but I think it was broseco? Had a painting on his wall of a couple cowhands double teaming a black bear and stretching it out. Cool pic. I bet you'd be alright. Wink

I'd be more worried about gettin shot than attacked by the bear. I had a personal  friend who roped a Rino. He roped cats and all kinds of animals around the world he never roped a bear so I will feel those shoes for him. There are pictures all in his house of the things he roped.

He died at the age of 90. But I got to here alot of his stories.

Seems like I read somewhere that in California back in the vaquero days roping  bears was the thing to do.  That was always one of their big goals was to kill a bear with a horse and rope.

I couldn't help but think when I saw that picture of the bear how it would look like a big ass hog if you walked up in the bay but if that sob stood up on its back legs and went to swatting dogs $hit would get WILD!

Just think how wild it would get if you sent a couple of bulldogs to the bay thinking it was a big ass hog!!!

Haha! I have ran a few of these scenarios through my mind in the past. Non of them were pretty!!!

Chance,

Out of curiousity, would you use your best roping horse, knowing you will need everything to come together for it to play out, or would you use your worst one, just in case the bear did the horse in?  Also, once you rope it, what is your next step?  Is that where T-Bob would get his crack at it?  In your mind, could one horse and cowboy get it handled, or would you have to have a heeler?  If you needed a heeler, who would handle those duties for you on this adventure?  You've got me curious, as I know you're serious about the whole thing (as am I).   Wink

I

I would use one of my old cow horses that has done just about everything you ask him to do if I need something bad roped I use him. I personally think it is a one man job. But my second step would be just to drag the bear and let the hounds work.
Third just see what the hell happens after that. If it looked like we could get some good pictures  alive with him than lets do it. If not well he was roped.
