I am new to this forum.. just registered. I was wondering how everyone's deer season in East Texas has been so far. We hunt a lease between Livingston and Huntsville. In the past we have seen and take a good number of nice bucks off our 1500 acres. This year however, the deer sightings seem to have dropped off. We have still taken a couple of nice bucks, but have seen veryfew deer moving in the past 3 weeks.
We have however seen a good number of hogs and shot a few. The hog sign is everywhere.
Do you think so much hog activity may be keeping the deer from moving or maybe even run them out of the area?
Thanks Hooleyman

I hunt the same area. Im not sure what happened last year i saw more deer in the thickets but the other people on the lease seen them all out in the clear cuts. Im thinkin maybe the rain made the stuff to thick for the deer to move around in so they moved to the open. I have killed more hogs this year we had another banner crop. Theyll be ready for Jan 7 i believe is the date. I did manage to shot 2 8 points but one had 3 tines broke off. One had heavy mass but only 10 1/2 inches wide. The other was a younger deer and he was 10 1/4 inches wide.

If you have a large number of hogs in the area it can lessen your deer sightings. I hunt the same lease as Clay. And, even though we have lots of hogs my family did real good. I killed a cool looking six pointer, my daughter got her first spike buck, my two sons each got a doe. My kids are 10 and 8yrs old. We saw a lot more deer and passed on several. The hogs in my areas were not coming to the setups until after dark. So, now that my deer hunting is done I'm going after the hogs. Shoot a bunch of them hogs and I bet your deer sightings go up a bit.

Thanks for the info... I was out of town for a couple of days and could not respond. We have managed to kill a few bucks also... 2 8's for me as well. We have seen a lot of hogs, one of the guys shot a 300# boar a couple of evenings ago that already had a bullet hole in his back I doubt we can kill all of them off...we trapped about a 60# sow a couple of weeks ago that had 10 little one inside her. If they breed that young and 2-3 times per year, we will never be able to catch up and get them all out. Any other ideas..? Thanks Hooleyman

Three pronged approach, trapping, hog dogging, and shooting as many as you can. They are prolific rascals.

OK... WE WOULD BE INTERESTED IN LETTING SOMONE COME IN WITH THEIR DOGS AND CATCH A FEW HOGS. YOU CAN KEEP THE HOGS, WE JUST WANT TO WATCH AND HELP WHERE WE CAN. NEVER SEEN IT DONE IN PERSON, BUT IT SOUNDS LIKE A LOT OF FUN ALSO, I GUESS I NEED TO GO THE HOG TRAPPING FORUM TO GET THE BEST PRACTICES FOR TRAPPING. WE HAVE 4 TRAPS, BUT THE HOGS JUST COME AROUND THE TRAPS AND NEVER GO IN. OCASSIONALLY, WE GET LUCKY AND ONE GETS INSIDE, BUT NOT VERY OFTEN FOR THE NUMBER OF HOGS IN THE AREA.
ANY BODY INTERESTED IN BRINGING THIER DOGS IN FOR A HUNT OR 2 AFTER DEER SEASON? WE ARE LOCATED OFF 190 NEAR POINT BLANK, TX HOOLEYMAN

Hooleyman, Point Blank is about 30 min from here. If you're really wanting to do it, we can bring some dogs out when you're ready.
