Was wondering if anyone hunted straight walker dogs. How do they compare to cur dogs, as far as starting them. Do they turn on quicker or is there a difference.

From what I have seen and heard hounds generally are slow starters. All the people that I know that run hounds (mostly on coons) don't start them until they are a year old.

From my experience the treeing walkers are slow on a track..hot or cold. No doubt they have a good nose BUT they lack the track speed or want to to catch up with their quarry..hogs... The ones I have hunted with are entirely to slow for my liking. JMO

All my coon dogs were barkin at caged coons by 3-4 months same as my curs start bayin hogs... Had some treein their own coons before a year old... I don't think their slow learners same as any breed some dogs are late bloomers maybe that's the ones u experienced ethhunters... They can b started at any age same as any breed just depends on whose starting them... I have seen many a walker that loved to catch up to a hog and eat it up when it got there... And know where there's some Runnin walker deer dogs that'll leave most curs in the dust and run deer all day long... Tree dogs are tree dogs, Runnin walkers are a whole different deal... But I've never personally owned or heard of a walker that wasn't wide open on track ![Wink](http://www.easttexashogdoggers.com/forum/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

Buddy of ours just bred a runnin walker to his bmc. Also have a friend in LA that runs runnin walkers on deer. He said the same thing....You dont pick these up till late that afternoon, said they will flat run a deer down!!! What I meant also was that the speed that the treeing walkers I witnessed hunted indicated they were not really intent on catching up to the hog but merely enjoying runnin the scent. But they would bay hard once there. Just did not like the fact that they wanted to smell every foot print left by the hog. Would rather them run "through" the scent such as a July hound is supposed to do.

Ya the treein walkers are slower seems like on track. But Runnin walkers are pretty quick only thing I hold against either of them for hogs is how open they are on track most of the time

Most of the running walkers Ive hunted with were sight mouthed dogs. But very mouthy while up and running a track.

There are fast ones. As in any breed some figure it out. Just as bird dogs learn to hunt where birds stay.Good hounds learn to get to a hog when they know they need to. I got one that will burn one up. However there are some hounds that have no bussiness trailing a pig.

Not true to all treeing walkers. Got on that will run the pads off a lot of curs and will flat burn up a track. Not saying hounds are better....just saying......

i got the best of both. i Run walker Cross. i got a 1/2walker 1/2cur gyp i didnt get her till she was 6months old. but she was already hunting and finding pigs. by 7months she was ranging over 600yrds. and she is definatly not slow on track. she is goin after what she knows HOGS.
my good friend has a FULL WALKER GYP. was started and turned on at 6months. she was hunting out 6-700 yards. she is constantly running. if u look on garmin she covers all area. she is 100mph out the box and when she hits a trail she gonna find it.
neither of these 2 dogs are open. so in my opion it has alot to do with what type dogs u start them with. and how u hunt,
these are not opions these are facts. so hopefully this can help.
