Does anybody have a copy or a ruling from the State of Texas on tax ememptions on hunting dogs vs livestock working dogs??  Does anybody have a Texas Sales licence for their kennel???  Another thread got me to thinking about what dog food and supplies are taxed and which dogfood and supplies are not.  I pay taxes on everything but wonder if they just dont enforce the law or has it changed since the 70'sa and I missed it?  My understanding of the Texas sales tax was that hog dogs or bird dogs or coon dogs are susposed to be taxes but cowdogs used regualrly in a persons profession aka a day working cowboy are not??

What is the process of getting a Tax ID number for a kennel?  What do you have to prove, other than receipts?  And unless you are getting paid for hunting ranchers' land or selling dogs, are you showing a loss every year?  Just curious how this works?  It would lead me to the next question, can you write off purchases such as a new dog, tracking systems, collars, cut gear, vet care and bills etc. since it is an expense for your kennel?  If anyone has literature on this, I would be interested in reading it.  Thanks guys?

Just keep up with all of your reciepts. Its really no different than filing long form and writing of exemptions for a farm. Keep up with all dogs/pups sold as income. And all money spent on feed, fuel, medical bills, etc for losses. Its really quite simple

We checked into this for customers that came into the shop and wanted a farm exemption on dog supplies.  We were told "no" by the state sales tax office.  They said nothing we sell can qualify for tax exempt status as farm use.

I called and they said only time you can get an exemption for dog stuff is if they are personally used exclusively as cow dogs or you are in the business of raising cowdog breeding stock, any recreational use of the dog like for birds, wild hogs, disqualifys and is actually a felony if somebody claims an exemption for hog dogs as they are not exempt.   So next time you go to TSC and buy dog food and dont pay taxes on hog dogs you are opening yourself up to a felony as you have filed a false tax exemption.  I asked what if they work hogs and cows both and they said pay the tax.  I can just see Austin going to TSC and getting dog food purchase records and sending hogdoggers a bill for back taxeslol

your besr bet is to talk to a licensed tax man or cpa and get it straight from the horses mouth so to speak . as far as licencing a kennel it is just like any other biznez go to the county comptrolers office and fill out the papers and get your tax id number . then remember to pay taxes on every dog you sell

a cpa will resaerch and find out any info you need to keep you and him or her out of trouble with the state go to a farm burough and ask who they recomend were ever your located . try and find one that handles farm and ranch work . i had mine for a while but shut er down when i moved will redo it when i get settled in it's a pain cause it's allways something new but it's worth it i got mine to begin with so if the city limits catch up to me with there dog limit laws i am grandfathered in as a buisness and the 4 dog rule dont apply

Pm Boarwild, I am pretty sure he is a cpa.
For what its worth, I don't pay taxes on my dog feed/equipment. If I am using my dogs for depredation control on my own property in an agriculture situation, I'd like to hear them tell me they don't qualify. They are not sport dogs, they are working dogs.
