For those of you that have had parvo on your yard, I would like to hear alittle bit about your experience...

Here is what i would like to know:

How do you think Parvo got on your yard?

How were the dogs kept? ( on chains, in kennels, concrete floor, dirt floor, etc. )

Where the dogs/pups that got Parvo first up to date on shots?

If any other dogs got Parvo, were they also up to date on shots?

Whats the oldest dog you've had to get Parvo?

Have you had any new litters or new dogs come on the yard afterwards that got Parvo?

I had an 11 mo old gyp get it that had all her shots and lost 2 other pups that were 4 mo old all were on concrete. Don't have any idea how I got it vet said it could have come from anywhere. I raised 2 litters of beagles in the same pens a year before never gave any shots until 8 weeks never lost one. I started raising pups in a pen off the ground and not putting them on the ground until 10 days after the second round of shots and haven't had any problems. This all happened 3 years ago and and I bleached the pens out over and over so far so good.

How do you think Parvo got on your yard?

- we had some one give us a pup that I believe had it.

How were the dogs kept? ( on chains, in kennels, concrete floor, dirt floor, etc. )
- concrete floors and loose in the yard.

Where the dogs/pups that got Parvo first up to date on shots?
- yes, some were dosed and sick within hours which led me to quit giving shots

If any other dogs got Parvo, were they also up to date on shots?
-  all young dogs were UTD on shots, we haven't had an older dog contract it (knock on wood).

Whats the oldest dog you've had to get Parvo?
- 4.5 months

Have you had any new litters or new dogs come on the yard afterwards that got Parvo?
-yes, those born on the property and some give to us.  They are kept in bleached pens until 4.5 / 5 months when they get their shot and kept for 2 more weeks....we havent lost one since doing it this way.

I believe we lost one a few years back to Corona, she was fine in the morning and then on her way out that evening....cold to the touch, gummy spit and lathargic.  Her sister became sick days later but I had already started her on Pepto / Aloe and B12 plus I took her to the vet to have tested (which was negative) but they gave me some antibiotics and anti-throw up meds and she never got real sick.

A hunting partner of my husbands puppy just tested positive for Parvo yesterday, we took him hunting Saturday night and was sick yesterday....this puppy has had all shots as the guy he bought it from is a stickler for them.....I want to say the pup is 6 months or so old and dont know where it could have come from.

Thats some nasty nasty stuff!

ok, thanks for the comments....

This is where im going with these questions...

Ive gotten several dogs/pups that have never had any shots and have raised pups and not givin them shots, and i havent had an issue with Parvo... same goes for several others i know...

It always seems to be the ones that get the shot that ends up with Parvo from what ive seen...

There may not be anything to this and we've just been lucky so far.... but it makes me wonder if its better to give them the shots or not...

How do you think Parvo got on your yard? Well we just moved so i think it was already there...BUT my vet did tell me when i recently took one of our pups in that flys are being linked to spreading it...they land on dogs feces and it picks up the virus, then they go flying around and eventually maybe get to a dogs water bowl or food bowl..another wya is you could be out somewhere and happen to walk where the virus is from someone else being there and take it back to your own yard...its very weird...

How were the dogs kept? ( on chains, in kennels, concrete floor, dirt floor, etc. ) All 6 pups were in a pen in the yard...it was really a sectioned off portion of my yard when they got it. My other dog that actually lives inside with me had gotten it first.

Where the dogs/pups that got Parvo first up to date on shots? No. Unfortunatly they werent..I really think it would have helped save them if they were..only my 6 month old lacy lived..

If any other dogs got Parvo, were they also up to date on shots? Well adult dogs that get parvo usually only show it thru signs of diarreah and MAYBE some lethargy...but some adult dogs dont have the immunity to it as others. One of our other dogs showed diarreah but now he is fine.

Whats the oldest dog you've had to get Parvo? 6 months. all the ones who didnt make it were three months.

Have you had any new litters or new dogs come on the yard afterwards that got Parvo? Well i just got a new pup...she is 4 months but utd on shots.. she shows no sign at all. We also ahve a litter of 1 week old pups...i guess we will know if sthey get infected once they get weaned...puppies dont generally get it when nursing...there is just a little chance they can depending on the mothers immunity.

And also, now I am bleaching EVERYTHING. Caroet, grass, tile floor, EVERYTHING. I got color safe bleaach for the inside but normal bleach for the yard. Yeah it killed out my grass but for one, whith the weather it was already dead and two, I would rather have dead grass than dead dogs...i spray everything a few times a week.

YOUR VERY LUCKY IF YOU HAVENT HAD ANY ISSUES WITH IT  Sad  ...i never did until our last litter of pit pups died...all 6 of them...  oh and also, pitbulls, and other bully breeds and SOME german shepherds are more pikely to get the virus...Sorry i know a lot about it ...im going to school to be a vet..

A few years ago, my Dad had a GSP with a litter about 4 weeks old. The gyp came down with Parvo and dad took her to the vet and about $600 later she looked like death warmed over, but she made it. The pups? Never missed a beat, grew off fat and sassy. .

The vet told Dad that if a stray dog comes across your place that is a carrier and marks a bush or leaves a pile, there it is.

I brought home an AB puppy July 3rd. July 4th she started acting sickly and that night I contacted the breeder. He said the other pups were acting sick as well and he called me the next day and said they had tested positive.

Now all I have learned about Parvo says the incubation is 7-10 days. I had Blade out for a few minutes and as far as I know he may have nosed this pup for a second. 3 days after that he gets sick and started passing blood. I have a set of 3 runs on a slab. Next to Blade was ZZ and Top, my 7 month old BMC pups. The 3rd day after Blade got sick, he was over it and he never really quit drinking or nibbling. By day 5 he was hitting the gate and barking at me.

3 days after Blade got sick, Top did too. A day later, ZZ was sick and on day 3 for Top and day 2 for ZZ, they died, and had never quit drinking some water.

Zach had just brought home a new Lab pup and it took 2 weeks for him  and he never really showed signs of being real sick until he died and we were treating him.

We have gone thru about a barrel of Clorox since then trying to keep it away from the Brittany and cur puppies. I think we have succeeded, but last week, they started getting sick and after talking with a friend that is very knowledgeable about dog diseases, it appears they have coronavirus.

We did loose 2 Britts and a cur , but all the rest seem to be on the mend with sickness varying from having to be hand fed to just loosing weight and not eating much. I am almost positive the cur pup got stepped on by Petra and that is why he died. But he was sick and weak.

The Britts, I dont know. They were eating, but just went in the night.

I have not lost a pup to coronavirus or parvovirus since the early 1980's and I raised quite a few litters.

I always make sure I give the 8 in 1 shot which includes the corona vaccine. Pi***** in the wind if it doen't have the corona.

I used to give 3 shots but at some point I cut back to 2 shots of the same and the first 1 at 8 weeks and the second 3 or 4 weeks later. Grown dogs get the same every year to 2 years and I haven't had a problem doing it this way.

I had never heard of Corona Virus either up until that one puppy had gotten sick and typically when one gets Parvo they all get it eventually....or atleast that had always been my experience.  I was telling our vet about it one late night and he is the one that actually mentioned the Corona Virus because I had told him how it had the same smell and symptoms of Parvo but it moved way quicker than any Parvo experience I had ever seen.

If youre a stickler on vaccines I dont see the harm in spending the extra money and getting it....my vet didnt say it was real common but that it was something they were begining to see more of and that the best thing to do was to let them do it to ensure the vaccines were good.

Another thing, the dog man I get  99.9% of my info from swears that vaccinating late in the evening keeps them from reacting from the shot versus doing it in the heat of the day....what do yall think?  do you have any vaccinating procedures?

I vaccinate in the early morning or in the evening, from my experience I havent had any problems from the shot. I lost a whole litter about 2 months ago at first I thought it was parvo but the more I looked at it the more I think it was corona but my vet is an idiot and tells me that I dont know what im talking about and that there isnt much corona in this area... I have heard from friend that they have been having problems with it too..

How do you think Parvo got on your yard?

Bought a bulldog pup at Canton Trade Days, make sure that if you buy a pup from there it never touches the ground while there.

How were the dogs kept? ( on chains, in kennels, concrete floor, dirt floor, etc. )

This pup was in the house and taken outside to go to the bathroom

Where the dogs/pups that got Parvo first up to date on shots?

she was only 6 weeks old but she had her first shot

If any other dogs got Parvo, were they also up to date on shots?

Got lucky and she was the only one that got it.

Whats the oldest dog you've had to get Parvo?

3 months old

Have you had any new litters or new dogs come on the yard afterwards that got Parvo?

No but have had one litter get coronas a few months later and havent had any problems since (knock on wood)

purebred dogs tend to get fatal diseases more often than mongrels...If I understood what I read years ago is that the mongrel has more diversity when it comes to genes and this naturally helps the dog in fighting off disease.

When I was a kid I did not worm my pups nor gave them shots and most lived. My pack was always mongrels that people through away down our road in the middle of nowhere. Well once I got and old time rat terrier and a catahoula type and both were bad to the bone...

Any dog, old or young can be host for the virus n never show signs or symptoms, it can be sread by anything, from anywhere. Rain will even spread it. Once u get it in ur yard its hard to get rid of. I had 3 pups, that were current on their shots get it. I brought a dog down from Mo. that evidently had it, or again couldv come from even a bird takin a poop in the yard. Anyways, the dog from up north mauled a few wk old puppy, killn it n then stsrted on anothr n killed it before i could get a clean line of sight n administered a couple doses of lead poisoning to him. Bout a wk later the last 3 pups out of a previous littet(2-3mth old) strated looking pale n sickly. Checked their gums n they were white from dehydration n skin was kinda clamy n fell slow when pulled on. Took the 3 to the vet, paid $120 for meds n a parvo test. Had to give 1 a dose lead poisoning that nite to keep from suffering. Saved the other 2 with boit 4hrs of sleep a day (24hrs) with 4 iv bags in a wk, 1qt of plain yogart, 24 eggs n 4 cans of sardines later, they made it n still doing great. Brst of luck to ya, n hope i never have to go through it.

Call me spooky but I spray the bottom of my shoes along with everybody that was with me with lysol after I walk another mans dog yard. I have only had one bout with what was diagnosed as corona. The culprit is believed to be shots from tsc that were bad. If somebody thinks they have it call me and I will give you every gory detail that I observed while I spent a week straight pumping gatoraide and liquified dog food in em.  Lost three saved one. Fight all the way boys and that chit ain't no joke.

there isn't much difference between corona and parvo. also it is about the same when it comes to being contagious.

Most TSC feed stores sell the 7 in 1 and it does not have the corona vaccine in it.
