Keep em Straight and Keep em Yeller

Lots of folks enjoy different builds of Yeller dogs usually to adapt to their local terrain or personal hunting style. I like my dogs to have a semi or full block head longer nosed with deep chest , slim stream lined build and a good set of legs under them.  I wont get into the paint on a Yeller except to say they call em Yellow BLACKMOUTH curs. LOL.

Some prefer the shorter blockier built bull dog type with short noses.  My prefrence is based mostly off of personal taste but also for traveling and covering ground and the longer nosed Yellers I have been around seem to have a colder trailing ability. If you have your own personal combination that pleases you what is your build a Yeller look and explain why that build attracts or just plain ole works for you.  Post the pic if you got your text book on the ground.

Enjoy

Bigger is better for me. I ilke a little loose skin, helps reduce cuts and a lot nicer to sew/staple than a tighter skin dog.

Jimmy it sure is good to see a pic of them 2 dogs again, also good to see you on here.

As far as building the perfect yeller dog? I'll just keep a dozen really good ones that come in varied shapes and sizes, oh and all but one don't even have a black mask  Grin But I do like a big leggy male with a broad head if I'm being picky, I will however pass on looks for performance every time

Red spotted with long hair and uh.....  OH I'm sorry I wasn't supposed to comment on the perfect color.

Enoung leg to cover some ground.  I like a taller type dog.  Longer nose to help breath.  Stout rear end so they don't break down.  Wide chest, so the cut vest fits.

The red dog in picture looks good to me.

If I were to go with the BMC I would want the females about 50 pounds and the males between 55-60 pounds  with slick red (dark yellow Huh?) coats. Natural hard tight bodies and medium built with good leg under them for speed and agility, yet have that look of power and strength...kinda like a middle linebacker or an iron man athlete.

Medium head with good length of nose/head and good ear that breaks over even with the skull.

It cost the same to feed a good looking one as it does an ugly one so I will go with the one that makes me happy and proud assuming that hunting ability is about the same. However I will have to say the better looking one will hunt better because he is built right.

OH...his face can range from frosty white to black... Smiley

Hunting style... pup would start baying shoats at 10-12 weeks and trailing them in the pen.
At 4-5 months take him to the woods and he will make a big round and check in. He doesn't know why he did it but it made him happy and mother nature just calls...

He has a good cold nose to trail and the smarts to cut and slash and find the exit track to locate...not a bush beater that looks busy but a dog that makes finding hogs look easy.

He has enough grit and has the natural inclination to stop a hog and then back up and bay. When he locates a good track he opens with 3 barks to alert the handler and call the other dogs to him...then shuts up until the hog is bayed. A few barks here and there after the hog breaks bay is ok with me.

This dog hunts with me and ranges from 200 to 600 yards around and sometimes further if no hogs in the area. As long as we are moving the dog is busy hunting that circle around me. This dog will do its best to put a hog at the other end of the tracks...

I like for the pup to be born with a long tail but bob it to 5-6 inches when full grown. This way he can be confused with a mtn cur... Wink

WHERE CAN I FIND ONE OF THESE DOGS??? Huh? Grin Smiley

Training dogs is not about quantity, it's more about timing, the right situations, and proper guidance...After that it's up to the dog...

IMO this dog has the perfect build for me...I wish I could get my blood tracking dogs to this size. 50 lbs, long legs, deep chest. Has endurance from he'll and just flat out gets the job done!  I'll spray paint his muzzle next time Smiley
