Got two new DC40 collars this morning already had two DC30 collars .  I hooked GPS to the PC updated everything collars included.  Now before I had these new DC 40 collars my unit would loose contact about half mile maybe a mile sometimes ,  But after all this updating I went out hung all them on fences post and took off on the wheeler .  Never once lost contact with any collar .  One mile fine , two miles fine, three miles fine , four miles fine, four and a half miles fine finally hit five miles never once lost contact with any collar and this was all on short range antenna.
Could not believe it myself.

Just a thought.  Now I don't know what the update done are didn't do .  But I think when people are running two three units around one another it can interfere with each others units even tho it may not say it on the unit .  Also I think maybe once you get three four five collars in your unit that work well together and don't interferer with each other such as todays results of mine.  I think maybe I should not be adding a buddys collar on my unit even tho it may not show to interfere it just might with out saying so .  I think maybe I should  just leave mine the way it is now cause it seems to be outdoing itself big time .  Before I had been adding a buddys collar here and there and never got more than a mile and a half out of it with out going off the unit.

Don't know for sure but something sure changed today when I took all collars off but mine and the new two DC40's I bought .

Five miles and could have got more but I stopped all on short range antenna !!!!!!!!  Man that is great and good nuff for me.

I don't own a garmin yet, but another site I'm on there is a guy that sells garmins and according to him you need to update your unit every so often. I think that is supposed to help in a couple of ways.

i have never been able to get that far with the rubber antenna. its been six months or so since i have updated my handheld. a buddy of mine was hunting down the road from my house and i had to use my long range antenna to pick him up around 3.5 miles and even then it would cut in and out. were you in a open pasture or what kind of terrain were you testing in?

Well it is not really flat .  Lots of slopes and few hills inbetween.  But like I said before I could not get but maybe a mile are so and then it was in and out on the same track I took today .  So I dont know what happen and all with the rubber antenna .  Also my place were the collars were kinda sits in a bowl so man I dont know.

You better check again and look at each collars info to be sure they have communication with the unit. Mine did the same exact same thing after I did the update. I ended up having to send mine in.

Another garmin question Yall might be able to answer. If I try to add a dog without being able to touch the collar and know the id number it will only let me add collars that let's say have a 3. It will give a list of collars 3,13,23,33 and the number I was trying to add was number 27. I have looked on other garmin handhelds and they can add any number collar 1 through however high the numbers go. Is this something at a update will fix or has anyone else had this problem?

Mike,   Well I don't know why mine is picking up so good just hung them on the fence and took off again at three miles they were still in contact,   three miles with full commutation.  so I turned around had to go do some things in town before they close.  While I was in town 1.75 miles in the middle of down town in the buildings it was still picking up.

Who knows.

Man you had better be careful out driving and stuff,....'cus you sure did use a ton of luck getting your collars to pick up that far on the little antenna. Do you remember what version of software it updated you to? I think mine are on 3.7 I do believe, but that may not be the latest now....all I can say is good for you Bud. Hope I'm that lucky next update.

I just updated mine about 2 weeks ago and I lost both my 40s at 600yds with rubber antenna by time I made it back to truck to get other antenna it had been about half an hour and pick them up at 500yd they we're on their way back and it was doing that before the update

Well did a little playing around today on the garmin and collars.

The other day hung them on a fence post which is about what four foot off the ground and got five miles and still going on the gps.

Well today I said let me put them on the dogs in the back yard and took off well guess what if you dont  think two three foot off the ground makes a big big big difference then I got some news for ya.

Put them on the dogs took off at a mile they went off the GPS just like before.

So there it is dont hang no collars on a fence post and test them put them on your dogs while on the chain and drive off its a hell of a difference .

Mile -  Mile and a half is all ya gonna get on short range antenna .

What about mounting the collar on about a 4 foot pole affixed to the dog somehow.....that ought to do it!....
