Florida passed a new law that took effect last month which taxes all public service "high risk" employees (Law Enforcement/Fire Fighters) an extra 3% for out retirements. now i havent seen anything that looks like a raise in 5 years (i know lots of people are out of work and I am happy to be working dont get me wrong) so ive been working every extra off duty shift i can get my grubby little hands on to pay the bills. So as i sit in my car guarding a lonely pile of dirt when my hunting buddy calls. he and another buddy are hiting a new place tonight thats LOADED with pigs. So with a tear in my eye i tell him im working and get off at midnight and would glady drive out if they are still hunting. hes been texting me pics for the past hour. :'( :'( :'(

Just trying to understand this: because you are more likely to die on the job, you have to contribute more to your retirement fund than other government employees? And the likelihood that you will live long enough to collect retirement is less than for other government employees? Is it because if you die before retirement, your spouse will collect your retirement? I'm just confused.

I hear some people bitch and moan about government retirement plans for police and firemen. To me, ifmyou hire someone under the auspices that their retirement is xyz, then in the middle of their csreer, u decide you cant afford plan xyz any longer and that you are gonna change it, that's a violation of the agreement or contract you hired that person under. They made their choice to work with the knowledge their benefit plan would be plan xyz. Now , how would the government like it if the officers or firemen arbitrarily said " we are no longer gonna work the # of hours a week that i was hired on to work. No difference between that and the govt making adjustments to police and firemen retirements. Just get ready,, i have a friend who is an officer in a large, dangerous city in cali. They have jacked the police officers around on their retirement, they have cut the dept by almost 2/3's, but they still give free health care, foof stamps and other assistance to illegals,,,, guess wat, the cops are over worked, feel betrayed, and aint exactly raring to put themselves in the line of fire anymore. Basicly, just writing reports now, after the crimes have been committed. You can only push people so far before they sya "what's the use of busting my azz and putting it on the line" we are in for some bad times, I'm afraid, good thing we can provide for ours with fresh pork,,, at least we'll not go hungry,,

If i wasnt workin 7 days a week i sure could. Im afraid my dogs dont even know what a hog is anymore.. May have to go buy one to put in the yard so they can atleast see one..   |

Aw boo hoo suck it up and get over it. (Just talking smack so don't think I am serious.) Ok, here is the plan. You go in and tell them you quit and go hunting. You mave have to live in your truck with your dogs. But if someone calls the cops about the hunting bum it will be people you know showing up to run you off. I do feel your pain. I hope you got a chuckle out of this post. |

Well buddy, u get my utmost respect, i dont know how law officers don't snap having to deal with so much of the scum of civilization, day in, day out. I've been an operating room nurse since before a bunch o folks were born(1974) and i've had to help try to save several downed officers, some we were able to help, several we couldnt save,,you guys on the front lines cant be thanked enough

Just got handed the same thing here in Bama RD. It won't have as much affect on me as it will you I'm sure, since I will retire in less than 2 years.
I do understand your being stuck on duty while your buddies hunt....I'm assuming that you work 12 hour shifts, which can really get in the way of hunting, ....we firefighters work 24 hr. shifts which REALLY can be a detriment to your hunting. So don't feel too alone in your boat.....I'm in it too.

Yeah we work a rotating 12. so every other weekend is a 3 day weekend. But with everything going up and pay going down im working 6 days a week just to make ends meet. Down side is the more i work the more they take out both in taxes and retirement. Worked over 120 hours the past two weeks will get me just aout to where i was before they changed everthing. If i wasnt workin every day id def be in the woods. but when you gotta get up at 0330 its hard to go to the woods the night before..

Hate to hear what's happening to you. Don't feel like your the only one though. The great state of texas is doing the same to us. Government jobs just not what it use to be. I always thought Federal Law supercided State Law, not always the case.

sorry ya gotta work and miss huntin. im curious on a tax on retirement. is it a true tax on what you pay into your pension or did you have to start paying more towards your retirement? i know here in the town i worked for the police and fire get 3 percent of their highest years earning times their years of service and full retirement age is 50. i do know that from now on any new hires will be at 3 percent at 55. one of my friends/ neighbors is getting ready to retire as a highway patrol sargeant and he will turn 52 and have 30 years in so he will get 90 percent of his pay as his retirement for life. i worked for the parks department for over 35 years and we got 2 percent at 55. so i retired last year with over 70 percent of my pay which with cutbacks and furlough days, i take home the same as if working. i loose my insurance next year but luckily my wife has great insurance at her work which for now is free for us both.

all i can say is i personally know alot of ppl out of a job having to move in with other family members just to have a roof over their heads and these are ppl that were doing really good in life before the economic crash. so if it was me i would be thanking god every day you have your job and are able to work over time to earn the extra cash, your very fortunate. when you do get that day off get after them hogs knowing your bills are paid and you have a home to go to at the end of the day. it will get better haNG IN THERE...

Gary are you in Fl? Thats exactly how it used to work, but they changed it (mostly fo new hires) but now everyone in the FRS is paying three percent no matter what they were paying before. the part i dont get is this, The FRS is the ONLY state retirement system in the Nation that is self sufficiant and MAKING MONEY! True the employers were paying into the retirement for their emloyees (no matter if you contributed or not) so i can see where the Governor would want to cut Govt spending there, however if the system is making the state millions every year why change it? The flip side is not eh Govt employers have extra $$$$$ left int heir budget which was budgeted for retirement but no one is seeing a raise.. Wonder where the extra $$ is going?? Gotta admit this thread did kindda get away from what i was trying to say. the situation i am in is better than alot of people out there, and for that i am grateful.. I was just whining about not getting to hunt last night.. |

Ok then quit your lob and take your retirement. Then hunt all the time. You will still be a hunting bum but have a little bit of money Then we can stop belly aching about politics and retirement tax stuff. I would love to hunt full time so I feel your pain. |

im in california and am in the state employees retirement system. i had the chance to switch from our city retirement plan to the calpers plan in jan of 2010. the city plan was 2 percent at 60 but we had a lump sum option which was always a good thing untill the market took such big hits. the wife and i looked at the options and found it was best in my case to go to calpers so i did. the city had held back our raises for several years and we were also on a day off without pay every 2 weeks and under the cal pers paln my retirement would be calcualted on 40 hour weeks without a furlough. so bein as i could walk out with 70 plus percent of my pay and the 2 years insurance at 55 i ran like a scaled cat 3 days after my 55th birthday in april of 2010. as long as the state doesnt go bankrupt i made the right decision.i do count myself as very lucky in this economy i know that. i made a bad decision last night though... i went and played poker and lost about 150 bucks and my huntin partner went and caught a 250 pound boar in the same place we caught a 140 pounder last saturday.
