Hunted last night with my Lana gyp, I've not owned her to long but have hunted with her from the time she was a pup, she has always, always been silent except if she was sight running a hog from a few feet behind, or bayed. She has been up all summer and raising pups. Last night on 3 different tracks she started she ran full open until I caught her  They were not hog tracks, but something small that she was after I believe coon really. This is the first time my dogs have been out of the yard sense it got hot and my abel dog wouldn't honor her track any of the 3 times. Anyone ever had a silent dog go open on ya, even on off game?  |

no ive got a buddy whos got a dog that opens a little on trail and it scares me that my dog will start to open up to i would just break out the shock collar and do the best you can. maybe she was wanting to go so bad she was just acting crazy

I have, seen and in fact owned a cur dog that would open on off game. Deer in particular. Hunted with an old hillbilly in the Kiamichie mountains He had an old dog that ran silent. If you cast him he was silent. If the old man rode the logging roads letting him wind from the truck, he would bark when he winded a hog, wait for permission to jump out and run the hog. silent when he ran it. Then one day we were driving those old logging roads and a fox ran across the road. That old man said, "want to hear him run a fox" I said sure, He put him on the track and he was wide open.

Could it be that she's just excited after being put up raising pups? If it was my dog I wouldn't worry about a shock collar. You won't even know what you're shocking her for and neither will she.

i know my dogs bark diffrent on trash , an my coonhounds sure dont sound right on trash

I've seen silent dogs open on trash like coons and such . As far as shocking a dog for opening on track your apt to mess up a good dog if the're runnin the desired game the're likely to relate the pain to the scent. JMO but that's not a chance I'd be willing to take !

I've seen a few older dogs start opening when they could no longer keep up with the younger dogs or when they get in a bad briar thicket they will open out of frustration I think because their body is no longer able to do what they want it to.. Also seen them do it after they have been laid up for a while...

I have a gyp that rarely trashes but when she does she yips on track and if she is running a pig she will yip. But if she is on a good hog she will yip immediately before she bays solid. So she will open but on trash or pig and silent on hog.

I kinda though maybe she was really excited and that was part of it and I do really think she was running coons off the creep feeders so maybe she is open on a coon and will stay silent on a hog? I've seen her strike and bay bunches of hogs before I owned her and she was silent then as well as last January or so when I got her. Guess we will see next time out if we can find any hogs up here

some dogs open more if they haven't been in the woods for a while. They start running silent again when used more often.

ive seen my silent cur open on small pigs 30, 50, 60lbs, he couldnt catch them their was so many. Drop him of that same afternoon and bay a boar hog that he ran for a mile dead quite... I guess its out of frustration.

Ifs its as dry there as here and you have creep feeders full its prob her going crazy on 2 or 3 coons running off from the feeders, I road the terriers i have around 20 55gallon barrel feeders and they have a different mouth if they come up on a family of coons all over the protein feeder and they all take off down the same cowtrail to the brush, sounds like the dog is superexcited since the lay off and wants to catch and kill the coon or bobcat that might be lurking giving off so much different and hot scent she has not been around since the layoff???

That's what I am gonna hope was the case were gonna go soon and hunt a staged hunt to see if she opens, but first I'm gonna road her until she is pretty wore out and see how she act's. Can't hardly believe a dog her age could just go open all at once after being silent her whole life. Thanks men ya'll made me feel better already  |

From past experiences it has been a deer that they jump,they seem to get more excitable about the deer crashing through the brush and it seems to make them stay open as they run until it gets out of sight or hearing distance. Havent had one just run a track open,nothing has excited even a fresh dog of mine but a deer taken by surprise has dang sure made some fresh dogs in the past yelp and squall through the trees until it outruns them.

Jimmy don't say that 4 letter word to me I sold my shock collar last year and it looks like I'm bound to buy another one :'( Coon's i can handle, deer i can't. thing is she didn't blow out like a deer does she worked a track each time for about 200 yards and then quit it and came back in??? no other dogs would honor the track or even seem to be able to smell it??? My Abel dog would build to her and yip once he was there then in a few second he would come back with his head down and get back to hunting, maybe they were killing opossums, heck I don't know what was going on really |

from what i've read i'd guess shes runnin a hot coon or possum track and when it trees she can't figure out what happened to it . alot of these stock bred curs have had the tree bred out of them , they run something up a tree , go around it looking for the track , don't find nothing and assume it dissapeared . lol

JDT, that's kinda what I think opossum or coon. She eats dillios for lunch but won't open a lick on them and I've seen her pass right through deer, but she has also bayed a coyote or 2 in her day. She is really a talented gyp with hogs and cattle, just a little trashy when she don't find a hog or has been laid up a while and hasn't worked any thing. Gonna do some trash breaking before winter sets in and try and get her lined back out. guys all your input has been a big help and I sure thank ya
