Ok everyone I need a little help and input from y'all. I just brought my first house and getting to start remodeling it and do the outside setup. My question is, my fiancé says horse hate hate domestic pigs would it matter if I put an 2 acres wild hog pen next to another 2 acres horse pen? The hog pen will be boarded up and trees all around it so the horses shouldn't really be able to see them.

I'm just trying to see where to place everything on my
Property and make a happy medium for the horses dogs and hogs. I don't plan on keeping very many hogs in the pen.

Thanks,
Vince

Vince, IMO, your girlfriend is right. As a general rule horses are scared number 2 less of pigs. Had one gelding put my mom in the hospital because a trailer full of hogs Pulled up next to them at a rodeo. Mom was saddling when all h*ll broke loose!!

I would say it all depended on ghe horse. I had a litter of pigs several years back and the momma died so I just turned ghe two babies loose. Those pigs followed that horse around until the got to big I got rid of them. They would allnthree eat out of the same feed bucket. Also a horse that is scared of hog would be no good to me. You can hang them off every side of mine and he wont bat an eye.

It'll be fine, I have two bares and a nasty lil red boar in the back of our barn and ther yard runs out into the pastures. All the horses have gotten used to them, even my sis in laws spoiled azz barrell b$%&# got used to it.

Horses are like big dangerous women. They will pitch a fit if anyone is willing to listen, if you ignore them and or require them to get the heck over it, they will tire themselves out and get used to alot of irritating stimuli

Only my personal observation, I dont know much for horses and would rather BBQ most of them than handle them

X2, my horse is worthless at a lot of things but a hog is not on is booger list.  I think being around the hogs would be good for the horses.

I have a 5 acre wooded bay pen and the horses share a fence on one side and has worked fine we hunt horseback allot so they need to see it. It helps the pups seeing horses standing around the bay to.

Do it, they will get used to it if they don't like it.

I agree with tiny, most horses will booger real bad at even the smell of a hog, had an old mare that was broke to death, bout dump me one time, cause the neighbor had put some pigs next to the rd. It took me a minute to figure out what was goin on, cause she never boogerd at nothin.
But I also agree, that with time and exposure, they will adjust.

Horses can learn to tolerate anything... just be careful lettin' any big boars in with them...

I had the unpleasant priviledge to see the aftermath of what a big domestic boar can do to a horse... raised together in the same pasture.. the boar got to rutting age and cut the horse under the belly so bad it had to be put down.  By the time the owners got home from work and saw the damage it was too late

X2 if our horses don't like something thats is more of a reason to put it near them so they will get over it.

Thanks for the reply everyone! Haha I feel the same way. My fiancé got all these damn can chaser and she all worried about them it's my fault for keep buying them but it gets her to shut up about my dogs  Wink

But I was think what y'all said they will get over it and just be fine with it. I'm sure they will all be fine and it's good for my rope horse that I use. I would like to start hunting off horseback one of these days.

i had a sow we caught had a litter in pen one got out and i got rid of the rest the one that got out started hanging with the horses now the little one is about 150lb sow and still follows the horses across the oasture and everwhere they go. the horses protects the pig from the dogs. if a dog gets out and after the pig the pig will run straight for the horses and will get under them then the horses go to kicking at the dogs not a good situation. its pretty funny to see two horses going across the pasture with a wild pig behind them. they eat the same food together the pig rubs on their legs its crazy.
