BLACK POWER!!!

X 10!!!

I agree with your post Mike. Yellow dogs seem to be the route most people are trying to go in these past few years. Especially on this site. It's interesting watching the dog trade evolve over these last 5 years..

Alot of people ask us why we don't hunt more yellow dogs, I just tell them cuz we wanna catch hogs Smiley jk I even have a decent yellow, that I don't mind feeding. He thinks he's black though, everytime we go he finds a mud hole and comes back any color but yellow, even he's trying to hide it

That's the way good dogs get ruined, I see the catahoula being ruined by bay pens and glass eye's and the BMC being ruined by the $. There will always be true dog men who keep, work and breed the better dogs but there harder to find than most people think. I think the really good line of dogs are rarely if not never for sale on the WWW or the  free paper cause " Good "  dogs sell there self to good dog men and good dogs are busy working, not producing 3 litters a year from the same gyp. It's just as tough to find really good BMC, hounds, heelers and Catahoulas around here for sale, the good one have homes before there ever born.

most true dog men don't care about the money...They care about identifying/selecting the top performers in the litter and then using this pup or pups in improving the bloodline and they try to place the other pups with someone who can breed back to their dogs if the dog meets his/her requirements/expectations.

I have seen the doberman , rottwieler, great dane, german shepard, red nosed pit, blue pit and a few other breeds get too popular and once this happens the breed goes south pretty quick.

I read part of this thread this morning on the way to the job. Now its at 100 plus replies. I know there are more Lacys laying around in houses and back yards than there are earning a living as working dogs.

I probably got 50 friend requests on Facebook from mostly women with Catahoulas. I ask what they do with them and they just have them. The Illinois Catahoula Rescue has multiple dogs listed daily trying to find a hone for 'em because somebody some where got tired of having it.

I have several Brittanys in homes with kids that get little to no hunting. Most are considered hunter / companions. But I couls ell 10 females for every male and when I ask why, the answer is usually a bunch of stuttering nonsense. I know deep down they have an idea about breedi9ng her later on. To what? and get what? They havent a clue but they know they just paid me $550 for a pup and figure they can charge that too. Never mind I spent a lot of time selecting the parents, seeing how they hunt and handle before breeding them.

All of my BMC pup went to someone that will hunt them and tell me how they are doing. I had a couple ask about a pup that dont hunt and I told them he!! no.

Some one said it earlier, when a breed becomes a fad, it is hard on that breed. Breed 'em for color, markings, eye color, tails or no tails. And never worry about what they can or cant do. I am sorry, but fly ball is not earning a living for a dog.

Its a sad state of affairs, but what can be done?

You know the Mt Cur Association is on Facebook. And a lot of the members are women that just have them to have them too.

This is why I hunt Fla curs. They suit me and are NOT bred for color. They can be any color, bob tailed or long tailed, and most are too rough to be just "pets". They never caught on as fads here in Fla and many people don't even know they exist. Which is a good thing to me!

The people that "usually" have had them for years use the heck out of them. There are plenty of still wet behind the ears guys that are starting to hunt them, but the older guys that have been hunting and raising them for years know what they have and what the dogs are capable of.

They aren't world beaters and they are rough, but many will consistently produce hogs.

As far as the YBM and Catahoula breeds, I know a lot of good marketing went behind those breeds to make them popular.....and to generate big bucks for the breeders...............not to say there aren't good ones in both breeds (as much as that hurt to say...... Grin ), but I think a lot of litters have been made because someone had two YBM or Catahoula dogs in their yard. I don't usually even breed a dog until they are 4-5 years old and I know what they can do in the woods. I have lost some opportunities that way, but I have avoided some serious mistakes too.

Who hasn't seen a young dog that was a fireball at a year old and by three you can't pour him on a  hog?? I don't want to breed more like that........................................

Spotted, yella, brown or purple.. All dogs r exploited for money and that's just how it is... What I find more disturbing is that many many hunters breed junk and don't know it... When there is a hog under every rock it don't take much
TEAM YELLER SIGHING ON  Grin First off where are you hunting that there is a hog under every rock? Thay ain't where im at that's the reason I have ybmc because we have to hunt for them here, I have had my share of cats and I could not find one that could smell a track. You say hunters breed junk and don't know it,, I agree with that.but.... I could have a dog that was absolutely 100% trash in my kennels and I could sell the dog to you or joe blow and he would be the best thing you have ever hunted, you no that old saying one mans junk is another mans treasure, that's where that comes in to effect  Wink all im saying is yes people breed trash that's a fact. ... but trash to you or trash to me? Its in the eyes of the beholder. Some people love short range some med and some long that's the reason there are so many lines of dog people just have different options on what's good and what's trash. And some just breed for color and cash.
Just talking not arguing here just me thinking out loud  Grin.         OOOOO YEAH AND GO TEAM YELLOW DOGS  Evil laugh

ive kinda skimmed over this topic, figured i could try and voice my opinion. we had a few yella dogs before, dont know what lines they were but we knew the guy and where we got them. mike has a point about the rise of "yella" dog sales. i think its ruining what real dog hunters try to keep. thats like for instance a dachsund, i never had one till the 3 i got now and they are a hand full, kinda like a plott in a 25 pound body. after reading and researching, ive found out that people mass bred these dogs for their looks and size to the point the hunt was bred out. sad story in itself but still i see where this is going.

and YBM i cant scream that up here, ill be shot  Wink

actually quite a few now that I am thinking about it...I can think of 2 big kennels that don't have anything I like as far as mtn curs go and they are well known and have been around for a long time. But that what makes the world go round.

I see the yella dogs going thru the same thing the catahoulas went through about 10 to 15 years ago. Pups are being mass produced, young unproven dogs (and culls Shocked) are being bred and people are buying them up like hotcakes... all because they're "yella".

I've been noticing this over the past few years... y'all seeing the same thing?

I would like to go on a hog hunt with a good line of yellow dogs that have a black mask, no hound crosses, and walk in catch dogs only. I haven't tried one in almost 20 years and would like to try to find the right line to breed a mtn cur gyp to . Sounds like we have a few good lines out there. I think it is easier to locate a good line now that we have the www.

I have been thinking about trying a Joey Hutson dog but would rather use a stud from hog hunting stock that hunt as good as his tree dogs.

Mike, I agree...popularity hurts a breed more than it helps it because the quality drops on account of in-experience, lack of knowledge, or just plain ole greed... but when the fad is over the true, hardcore, and dedicated breeders will be the ones who will save the breed...

It's a pendulum that will swing back and forth. It's just the BMC time. Give it a couple of yrs and it will swing to something else.
