Thats why I keep a few close friends. Got enough around to be able to put me back into the Yeller dogs perty quick if I bite the hard one. Shouldn't have to worry bout it if you stage your dogs correctly but chit happens!

I have been doing that for years, getting verbal permission to breed back to any of the pups coming out of my yard if needed.

I am starting over again and I am trying to duplicate my old line of dogs I used to run. Only difference is I will add a touch of pit or a touch of super rough florida cur that produces hog. But only after I get these dogs hunting like I like...

if i had to start over i would get foundation BMCs and breed them to a good game pit, i would also look into a jagd breeder, and would get some plotts to keep them running

I really like the sound of that, but I received little encouragement from those I discussed the cross with. I had dreamed of a close range wind dog that only barked when forced to by a bad one. Short races and catching 200lb. sows with a pair. I look forward to seeing your pups.

Shankem which cross did you recieve little encouragement about?  Sometimes ill run two dogs on thegrond at the same time, and the one thats always ont he ground is  6 yea old Fl cur.  If i run him and my cat cross gyp together i may get a bark or two (from her) ive never see him bay with another dog.  If its him and my year old there aint no barking.

I was thinking of crossing my mt. curr with my pit. Sounds like you got a helluva dog down there; usually don't need a bulldog with a pair like that. Awesome!

Shankem the large majority of Fl curs are gritty, and usually catch their own.  Thats why i was wonderin on which cross.  Both my pit and my cat coss broke out of their pens while i was at work.  came home to them locked up.  I keep in contact with 7 out of the 8 people who got a pupa and they all said they already will bay a SMALL hog.  Pups are 4 or 5 months.  the one i kept hasnt seen one yet, but my hunting partner has 2.  One will bay one we have to hold on too cause hell catch.    Youll never know till you try the cross.

I wouldn't do it the way I have the first go round! I would find someone who is using their stock/hunting dogs that fit the style I like on a weekly or preferrably a daily basis. I would then work my tail end off for them, beg, bribe, and do whatever I had to until I got the chance to buy a pup or two from them. I would then raise them up the way I wanted them to be raised, and hunt the fire out of them when they got old enough. I would have a base to go off of then, and earn the respect of my peers by having quality, not quantity.

By the way, breed would not matter to me. How they work and how the previous generations they were out of worked would matter. I don't care if it is yellow, leopard, black/tan, blue, white, or pink and purple polka dotted. If the line of dogs suited my purpose and style I would pursue it.

Been there, done that.  Tried just about everything, doesn't mean I had the best of anything, but I gave 'em all a try.  Cleaned house about 4 years ago, with the exception of my first cur dog, and went to straight Kemmers.  Not saying that they are the best hog dogs in the world, but they sure suit me and my needs. 

But at the end of the day, what should matter the most is not what breed of dog it is but that it's owner takes pride in owning it.

  i found a family of dogs that suited my needs ( except hunting too deep sometimes ) and am running with it .

   1 bad cow or boar hog and i could be starting over again !       but at least now i know where not to start !

I did that and all I got was leftovers. I want the whole litter to play with. Catching hogs regular with what I got just want to breed my own. At this time I am leaning towards a proven deep cast cur/hound cross with lots of stay. Less vet bills and hopefully a better % of hunting dogs. If I can't shorten the race I want dogs that go yonder and bay for hours if need be; if I'm lucky they'll be runnin' miles and miles if need be. I have found it difficult to carry weight on my heart when a pup was built up only to have DYSPLASIA or lack of want to; so this is where I'm at.  Not starting over; trying to get started now.

 At what age do you test pups? Test for tracking or catching? Winding? This is why I'm not breeding her for awhile.

i would use nothing but campbell curs from georgia. i've had four and won't hunt nothing else.
