Ok have a notion to build me a spear.  Have a couple ideas but want some input.  Should I go with the Austrian style with a sword on the end of a stick or african style with a broad head on the end of a metal rod wood end?  No dogs involved.

Haha, me and Lee were just talkin' about this on the way home from our hunt today  Grin

I like the old european spears that have a "stop" on them to prevent the hog from running up the shaft of the spear and hookin' ya...

...We playin' around with the idea of tryin' this instead of a catch dog...  Grin

Go to cold steel knives on line they make a nice one with a stop. You can get a 3 foot handle and a shealth. I put a old gun sling on mine and throw it over my Shoulder and go. Works great.

I don't like the cold steel because it is not really made to be thrown.  I was thinking somewhere around 6 foot total

I would think it would need to be fairly long but not real wide...just my thoughts. Penetration I would think, is going to be a big factor in the design if you're going to throw it and impale a hog with it. You bringing this up made me think of a story I read years ago about the Lee brothers, famous big game hound men from out West. It seems the Lee brothers decided that hunting our north American game wasn't quite exciting enough for them anymore,......SO they come up with the brilliant idea to go to South America and hunt jaguar with hounds. I reckon they killed a few, but while down there and getting their feet wet on this great adventure, ( I sometimes wonder what fun it would have been to do something this wild, just light out for South America for the heck of it, just to kill some jaguar), they ran across this old indian that used his dogs to hunt and kill jaguar. They went with him a few times I think and he used a spear to dispatch these cats. This spear had a crossbar on it not too far up the shaft, when asked why it was there, he allowed it was to keep the jaguar from running up the spear and killing you after you had speared it!  Simple enough I reckon.....he had some cur dogs of who knows what kind that he used foir this. Apparently they witnessed him kill a large jaguar with his spear....his dogs would bay the cat and he would ease in and get the cat to charge him, whereupon he would impale his spear into the cat's chest up to the crossbar and hold on until it finally keeled out,....not an easy task he said,....you had to keep forward pressure on the spear of course, even if the cat backed up or came forward. They said that one large jaguar actually lifted the little guy's feet up off the ground after he speared it in the chest. I don't know about y'all, but a man that will goad a full-grown animal as large and unpleasant as a male jaguar into a charge in order to spear it is has some hard bark on him I say. They later found the poor guy and his dogs laying dead beside a big jaguar that had gotten off his spear and killed him, then died out as well.....all together in the jungle in a small clearing. Ooooops....sorry PBR....it wasn't my intention to hijack your thread.....this tale came to mind and I thought I would share it with all here. Good luck with the spear....keep us posted.

Lol cool story yeah anyone with gahonies that large is something.  I'm really leaning to a mix of the two.  8 to 10 inches of double sided cutting then about a foot of rod and about 5 feet of wood.  This is just the picture I have in my head.  Have not decided all the little things yet.  My one big thing is how to go from wood to metal with the most strength.  Kinda leaning toward a hole drilled in the wood then a metal piece like on a hoe.

I agree with you on the design,..I was thinking that if you could come up with a thin walled piece of pipe as a transition piece to fit the wood into that it would give the most strength seems to me. If you can get a piece of seasoned Hickory for the handle I doubt that you could break it. That stuff is tough as nails.

Okay, I have no problem flipping and tying a big hog with my catch dog on his ear...but this spear idea is going to separate the men from the women because if a big boar made a run at me and all I have in my hands is a spear......I would throw it...down.... and run screaming to the nearest tree! I think that this heat must be getting to yall.   Cheesy

I'm kinda thinking like Tom here,....a mad jaguar is quite a formidable critter to be in close quarters with. I'd enjoy trying a spear out on a hog though,...I think that would be a good test of one's ability to stand your ground. Shocked Sneaking in close enough to be lethal with a spear will be a task I'm thinking. Wish I could try it out sometime..... Wink You have a good idea there PBR about the fiberglass handle....that would be the way to go I think, and I think I would prefer it to be rigid as opposed more limber and flexible....I had several spears as a kid that I made from various materials and I think that a rigid handle would be more accurate than a flexible one....just my opinion.

Anytime I hunt where they have big cats or bears I carry a 44 magnum! Too many stories. I don't throw knives or spears.
