Do you guys let a dog start running a drag from the point you start the drag or is it best to let a dog start it where you finished it? reasoni ask is im thinking a dog will run into a track n run it backwards if hes used to running drags from the point they are started.

i would think when you put down a drag the scent is the strongest where you start it so a dog would get used to running from a stronger to weaker scent. so is thats whats gonna happen once they hit a track go from from strogest to weakest smell?

haha if i start em from the finish i guess they are already there. some people say start em from the finish point of your drag so they can run from weaker to stronger scent.

weaker should be the oldest so that is where you start the track which is where you first started laying it down....

if you want the dog to learn the direction then lay a longer track and come at it at an angle about the middle of the drag and see which way he will take it.

jdog think about what you're saying the strongest point of the drag is the end of it .the weakest point of a drag is the beginning . no body that i have ever known has said start at the end of drag . if you are putting a caged pig or coon out for the dogs , place the [prize ] where you want it and then go away from the [prize] and pull a trail  or drag  back to said prize . so that dogs are trailing from the weakest point to the prize just like in the wild . if you place the prize and then drag away from the prize you will teach the dogs to take whats called a back track going where the hog was ,not where it is at . allways go from point A to point B  not B to A  start to finisn not finish to start . GOT IT ??

I think what he is suggesting is that when you put sent on your drag bag it is strongest at that point then the longer you drag the less sent is on the drag bag. Therefore it is possible for the sent to be stronger from b to a than a to b. If you are using a coon skin or a live hog you dont have this problem. Now I've never noticed this to be a problem as I only use the sent drag bags on pups and on short sent trails. I just go A to B and haven't seen a problem.

if you are using a canvas drag you put the sent on the dragand store it in a ziplock bag . and when you drag a piece of hide it is still stronger at the finish . the drag works the same way . the animal smells the same all the time and the further it gets from point [A] the weaker the sent is at point [ A ] . but i just use a piece of hide stored in the freezer for pigs . the sent will be  powerfull at a wallow and get stronger leaving the wallow  and weaker coming into the wallow . much like using the canvas drags and sents . a dog with any hunt smarts will figure this out quick , some knuckle heads will take longer .

x2...need to simulate hunting conditions...otherwise will be teaching dog to back track. Grin

Let the dog go from point A to point B.
B having the catch or prize!
