I have not been able to hunt any at all since May and I figure I'm not gonna be able to get back to running my dogs till Jan. or Feb. I've cut my pack back to a couple of my favorite/best dogs.

My question is do any of you guys do any think to kick start your dogs back to hunting?

Like mock hunt, put them on some trapped hogs , or just back in the wood. .... Just wondering how others do it.

Just back in the woods, maybe prime some younger dogs in the pen, but older dogs go straight to the woods

x2...and the bay pen works well too...puts hog back on their minds...helps to keep trash running down to minimum on the straight dogs.

It depends on the individual dog.

I got a cur from a guy that had been in a pen for almost a year.  She hit the ground hunting wide open, no problem.  Every good cur I've ever owned could do that after 2 months.  She is the longest time example I've seen.

One of my Jagds will fall asleep in the dog box or pen, while the others bounce around like trapped squirrels.  The dog is so mellow he's lazy.  He turns on and off like a light switch, and time doesn't matter to him.

The other Jagds are liable to act terrible at the beginning of a hunt, regardless of the time they have been penned.

I took almost a year off with my dogs 2 years ago and i went straight to the woods and they hunted better than when i put them on there chains.  If they where already finished dogs i would go straight to the woods.  They will be ready to go!  Good luck man
