The breed is a factor but its the individual dog you can get the best line but u could get the worst dog

advise.... GET OUT NOW while you still can. welcome to the ethd The best advise i can think of is find someone local and go hunt with them. Let them help you find a dog. I wasted a ton of money buying worthless dogs when i first got into the sport. to me buying pups is a crap shoot unless you know the parents hunt and hunt good. when buying a grown dog go hunting with it before buying. the best thing I have learned on this board is "listen with your eyes" dont believe what you are told or read. There are some good people on this board but there are also some dog peddlers who will promise you the world. Good luck

when i choose a dog it has several factors to consider and ask yourself... you want longer range or closer range dogs?, the type of terrain that will be hunted the majority of the time? and the biggest question is will it hunt a hog...
but i agree with PEACHCREEK 100% look before you buy just like a vehicle test drive it before you pull off the lot.
goodluck man

QUICKLY Send me all the extra money you currently have along with an IOU for any extra money you may have in the future.
Seriously, there are a few things you must have and many many more things that we think we must need.

My advice is to put some serious time in just tagging along with some people that know what they are doing before you even consider getting your own dogs.
Also spend some time searching through some of these old posts, there is a lot of good info here.

no joke get a different hobby, hook up with some buddies that go all the time. that way you dont have to feed and water and when you get in from hunting you can go straight to bed, lol- pick a style of hunting you like, they all work on catching hogs.then spend alot of time looking at bay dogs, and remeber make sure when you get a dog and it makes you happy dont worry about what other people think.good luck with it and if you want i you can make a hunt with me.thiers lots of good guys on here that will help you out

As a newbie as well I will thow my 2 cents in.
Hook up with a good bunch of guys, sit back and do as told, and be as courteous as you can. I had never even heard of hog doggin till a guy who did it came to work with me. He finally took me along and I was hooked as well. I tagged along countless more times, following my advice above, and now have two free pups from the group who at 8 mos old are really starting to turn it on, and I have first pick of a litter that just recently hit the ground. They could see that I was serious about hog hunting and said they would rather see me start out with some potentially good dogs(pups are a crap shoot), than have to go through all the crap dogs that they did when they get started. Even though I have hunted behind all the parents to my pups, I realize that the pups may not turn out like their parents. But at least having seen the parents work, I know the pups stand a good chance, instead of taking someones word who you dont know.
The guys that I am running with are more than willing to help me out. They said if the pups I have now dont turn out, they will get me some that do. And also I realize that it may take a while to sort through some pups till I find some that hunt the way that I want them to. I am more than willing to wait it out on some free pups than to go dump a ton of money on a dog that someone tells me is great but really isnt worth a thing. Plus it will be so much more rewarding knowing that I raised the dogs from pups.

NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER buy a dog you havent seen work!!!!!!
Can not stress this enough... You work for your money and if you just wanna give it away then PM me and i can help!!
Never do it even if you know the guy and he swears up and down its a "jam up dog man she'll hunt!" DONT do it you have to see a dog work and know they will fit befor you can hunt a dog and only you know what you want!
Anybody worth while wont have a problem with letting you see the dog hunt or work, AND REMEMBER a bay pen is not the woods so just be careful.
WELCOME and good luck!!

When i bought my first dog at about 14, the ol boy threw the YBMC in the bay pen with about a 70 pound pig, he ran in a caught.( no problems)
However, i didnt see him trail and didnt really think about it either. honestly. so after a while of training hes been rolling good!
