Does anyone know if u can use dogs on hogs in the Sam Houston National Forest ? If so when is the season for this. Thanks in advance. I am new to this forum and this sport and I love all of the info I can find on this site. The stories of the best dogs and the meanest hogs are awesome. Any suggestions on what the best starter dog for a newbie would be?  It would have to be a short range baying dog? Thanks again.

The season in the forest ends on March 15th... lots of hogs out here. Just about every where you go you'll find hogs. The biggest hogs i've ever caught came out of the forest.

Get you a good started cur dog that's finding hogs already. Breed doesn't matter unless you're looking for something specific. I started with all puppies, but was fortunate enough to have friends with dogs to hunt them behind... it's a long road starting that way.

Good luck and welcome to the boards!

Mike's right I started with pups also and looking back if I had to do it over again I would have spent the money on a started or finished dog. Experience is everything.

I'll echo the two folks above me.  I'm into hog hunting with dogs about two years, now.  Started out with one Dogo pup then added a couple of cur puppies.  Two years later; the jury is still out on the Dogo.  He is getting better every trip, though.  One cur (BMC) didn't work out.  The other was going gangbusters 'til she died in an accident.

Ended up buying two BMC's one finished, one well started.  Found a pit rescue that was around a year old and took to it like she's been doing it her whole life. And still got the Dogo.

It has also taken me some time to find places to hunt, of my own.

If I was starting again and knew what I know now, I would have hunted with as many folks as possible to see different ways of hunting and different types of dogs.  I would have then bought dogs that were finished or well started and hunted the style I want to.  Throw them in with friends packs, while I found places of my own.  I'd be where I am today but would have spent a lot less money and headaches.
