I have a fairly new Garmin 220 and twice I have had troube with losing signal . I tried everything , new batteries, recalibrate, cuting off and cutting back on . I did find the dog finally but still took 15 to 20 minutes before the handheld would pick up signal from collar . Im about to carry my unit and my collars back and get a refund or trade in . But before I do does anyone have any suggestions or had this type of problem . None of our dogs ever got out of range of 1 mile and we lost signal at 300 yards out . Any help would be great .

Depending if your technically savy or not, or if you're one to break everything you touch..... You can do two things, the gps reciever on the DC 30 has a small little cord that runs along the collar itself which plugs into the back of the device itself.  Pull that out and CAREFULLY place it back it, if you meet resistance do not force it, but pull it out and try again.  If that does not fix your issue you can do a hard reset.  Remove the two screws on the metal bracket that connects to the collar and then remove the four screws that allow you to get to the inside of the "black box".  You'll see a set of small wires plugged together, once again CAREFULLY seperate the two wires.  Wait 30-45 seconds and replace.  If those two do not fix your problem, you should contact garmin and they should send you a replacement depending on how new your device is.  Hope it fixes your issue

The 40 is similiar. Also check the antenna cotact point on the collar. Have you tried a different collar with another number to see if it has the same problem?

It could be your collars and not the handheld. Mine used to do the same thing. I ended up buying some orange antenna off gun dog supply. I believe they are called tuff skin antenna. 10 dollars a piece. I haven't any trouble since. But before I had bought those anntena I bought a replacement dc40 antenna and it worked for a short period of time and started messing up again.

I had the same problem with my (almost) new 40's after the updates. But I bought some tuff skin antennas and haven't had problem since they work great and are well worth the little extra $.

It's probably the collar, I had the same problem with the first DC 40 I bought.

Call or e-mail Garmin and they'll walk you through some trouble shooting steps... update 220, update collar, do a master reset on 220.

When those don't work, they'll have you send it in and send you a new one.

Try changing the communication number.  I have to set mine in the high 40s,50s or it won't work at all. 30s and 40s

The dc 40s are garbage.  If any of you folks get an opportunity to purchase a DC 30 BUY IT!! The 30 is more well balanced and allows the gps reciever to get better signal.  Hope you get it workin' bud.

Im gonna try and update the handheld and collars b4 the weekend . One out of the 3 collars hasnt give any trouble at all . You would think that all this equiptment being less than 6 months old wouldnt  give any trouble . Im also gonna check in on the other antennas . It isnt no fun losing a dog . Mine are young and not real good right now but i dont want to be starting all over again looking for some descent dogs .lol. So I got to get this issue fixed . Thank you all for all the suggestions .

Go to the dog and hit menu. Second one down on the little window that pops up will say communication setting.  Change that to a different number a long ways from the one it is currently on. Last Friday I was used a new collar and had to change it several times before it started communicating correctly. Hope this helps.

Had the same problem with both my dc40s.......it was the antenna both times. Garmin will send you new ones. Or get some of the new tough skin antennas. The 40s are great collars....remember these are electronic devices....I'm amazed that they work at all under what we put them through.
