With the shut down of the bay dogs dog selling website and new members coming on everyday, I thought id help a few new guys out before the inevitable thread pops up about what does this mean? Here are a few terms you'll see bantied about on the dog trade and some useful tips to avoid disaster.

Read the rules. They are there for your benefit not to be rude or because the mods are on a "power trip"

Before buying a dog, click the user name and search their stats, if the majority is on the dog trade then do a lil digging. It doesn't necessarily mean they are bad folks, just that they probably dont follow the ol' dogman code Wink

If you get screwed bechase you didn't do your research, dont whine. Take your licks and learn from them.

Generally speaking;

Finished. Done fooling with them.

Started. They eat sleep and poop or bark at a hog

well started. They've been eating sleeping and pooping at my house too long and bark at a hog

Long Range. I dont actually have a Garmin but the dog is usually out by the road as were leaving.

Short range. Im always tripping over it and my friends are laughing at me

A bit skiddish. Im gonna meet you at a gas station and call you from a disposable phone because when this dog gets out of your truck you'll never catch it again.

Feel fee to add. Keep it clean and dont hurt nobody feelings on purpose. This is always a fun topic, but remember, if you got screwed its because you dropped your drawers.

Finished: they already found the last hog they're gonna find.
Leggy: they can outrun a hog( usually the hog is chasing them)
Jamup: don't put ur foot forward or the dog will jam u up
Gritty: unbathed sandy dog
will bay the hair off a hog: will bay domestic pigs but not wild ones
Catches ear: strike dogs ears are gone as proof
Sure enough: not as sure as u want

"Too Many Dogs" = Too Many That Aren't Worth A Crap.

"I'm Going To Run All Blackmouths / Catahoulas / Fill In The Blank" = I hunted with a guy the other day that had a ________ that found a hog when we walked him up close, and so I'm switching because he said dogs of that breed are all that good.

"I'm selling all my males / females" = None are really any good, but I'm not capable of determining when a female is in heat and I'm tired of dealing with puppies.  Besides....the $25 puppy market is pretty saturated anyhow.

"I'm Selling Out" = Usually means I've got a clearance sale going on to make room for next months inventory.

"Need Cash Quick For New Guitar Strings" (Or other similar lame excuse) = I found this dog the other day that somewhat resembles a working dog and might as well of found a $50 bill laying there.

All in fun....

lmao well said guys i learned the hard way  in my younger years i bought every dog from south texas to mississippi looking for what it was that makes a hog dog till i slowed down and hunted behind them first and having an honest man tell you what the true faults of the dog was and let you make your mind up if that was the dog for you or not honest people are harder to find because there is money in hog dogs for some people looking to scam the folks that might not know better .
just my 2 cents......

Bottom. This dog has long ears or it always runs off and keeps getting caught by landowners in the daytime and I'm probably gonna get in trouble soon

yep, so have I. But been to Tennessee and ill . as well and a few more in my younger days.

In Mississippi I bought 5 mtn curs a little over a year old (average age ). long story short I culled every one at the end of about 3 months ...Did my best to breed my own after that ...the wierd part is the man I had been talking to for a month on the phone wasn't there when I made it to his place ...but had a few hunting friends waiting on me... Most of the time they have exactly what you are looking for...don't say what you are looking for but ask what they have.

When you breed your own you will be a lot happier...
