your opinion is exactly rite in my opinion  Grin  i hunt females and prefer them to males . only reason i even hunt males is for a little muscle and tend to be a little more gritty [sometimes ] the hunters of the animal world has allways been the females do to the fact they have to raise their younguns ,most times without the help from the males . they start ,learn faster , and are alot less hard headed

I like gyps. Ain't nothing wrong with males, lord knows I own a few, but I seem to have better handle and mojo with gyps. People will say if you run all dogs you ain't gotta worry about estrous cycling but that ain't quite true as in my opinion, males are ALWAYS in heat. Wink

I agree with (males are always in heat ) I wouldn't take anything for my male, but I hate the way sometime he has to stop and piss on every other tree he passes. I mature female just does her job and ain't worried about all the other dogs.

i have both and gyps seem to work better at a young age but if you spend the time to get a male dog tuned up they work just as good as a gyp

Deer, rabbit, coon and all of the hog dogs I have owned I liked the females better, seem not to be as hardheaded and the males having to stop every 50 foot to pee on a tree drives me insane.

x2...

but when the males are bred right they don't go peeon every bush because they have hunting on there mind unless a female is in heat...that's another thread Grin

Like all of you I have had good dogs in both gender. I have had male dogs that would getting in a pissing contest that would turn into a fight, when I would intervene they would stop for a long while. I have had a few different sets of females that would try to kill one another on a very frequent basis that could not be hunted together, they did not care about me stepping in if you know what I mean. It seems to me that a hard headed, strong willed, dominant pair of dogs can come from either gender and they always seem to be really good dogs that you just don't want to get rid of.

a dominant dog does not necessarily mean the bravest against a big bad boar...sometimes the meek and weaker dog can be as courageous as a good catch dog.

I am not doubting your statement at all, but in my 30 plus years (like you) of dog training and horse training most of the time the dominant animal has the most drive.  I've had dominant bitches that I've culled due to the fact that they would try to fight to the death. So I'm not disputing you at all but like you I've been doing this a while and this has been my experience.

How can your trust something that bleeds for five days and don't die?!!!! J/K the best dog I had was a female started naturally and didn't care what another dogs was doing handle like a dream. I started out coon hunting with a big male treeing walker and from the get go he was trained and hunted by himself 80 percent of the time. He was independent would not honor another dog. They only problem I had with him was at a comp hunt in georgia  where somebody hunted a female in heat of the 4 dog cast 3 were gyps mine being the only male he told us she was in heat but covered her area with vicks and said she would be fine she was a jam up dog but that night she didn't leave the road staying right next to flagging her tail. I with drew and made a complaint. other than that i do think females handle better and start earlier nut put a male in the right situations and I have no preference. When worked with right they all work their butts off for you. Males may just need a bit more time to mature and a bit more handling but either will work for me if they do there job

Man not this subject again I like to hunt females. I think they want to please me more. But I like males too. It is easier to get female puppies thanks to most people wanting the males. So you can get a better female easier in my limited opinion.

females tend to have a higher prey drive as a gender, as with anything there are good and and bad in any.Females do seem to mature faster and its nice not watching hackles up pissin matches. Ive cut a few cranky males this year that were very good hunters just butt heads about fighting i love it there woods burning machines now with no bs.  good dogs hunt what every gender

I have both on the yard and like the females the best , I prefer to run them with two male dogs and usually try to keep litter mates together . In doing this it feeds on  the natural need to compete . As everyone seems to agree to the female matures faster and the males  try to keep up with her. If I have any aggression problems the removal of the family jewels usually takes care of this. Out of the eleven dogs I own the females are the grittiest (excluding the bull dog ) and out strike most of the males.  Hun’t Um up!!!
