in the last 20 yrs I've owned everthing kind of hunting dog there is and hunted game from rabbits to bears and hogs. I dont think a person can say that one gender is better than the other. Just hunt the ones that hunt and cull the ones that dont.

Ok, females are smarter... They mature sooner, hunt harder, are tougher, and they're better looking! Don't believe me ask my wife, lol!!!

They're great ones from both gender!!! They're culls from both sides? Friends are enjoying both genders from my last litter.

Fixed dogs hunt the same all of the time, good or bad... Heaven only knows I wish I had not fixed my dog!!!

Most dogs worth getting fixed are the ones you end up wishing you could breed  Undecided

maturity and brains are usually a case by case kind of thing in my opinion. I have been in the woods with alot of good dogs and a handfull of great dogs. I've never seen a great dog of either gender that didn't think they were top dog. It wasn't that they were fighters, they were just gonna have things their way. I think hounds and curs mature at different rates and different families of both have tendency to mature faster or slower than the norm. I think genetics play the largest part in these traits. Where I think males and females are different is  in their tracking ability. As a rule of thumb, I beleive your females are a little less cold nosed but carry a track alot faster. I think males are a little colder nosed and might not carry a track as fast, but there are always exceptions to the rule. I know at one time, the TDC man dogs were ran in packs of all males or all females. If they were hunting a fresh track, they normally used the female pack because they would put more pressure on the person with their fast tracking. If they were hunting an older track, they used the males because they were usually colder nosed and more thurough. Of course heat cycles were another reason for gender packing too. These have been my observations over the years.
