Has anyone ever tried using blue heelers as help dogs to hit those running hogs from behind. Like they do when they hit cattle from behind. They seem to be natural at working animals from the rear. Just curious.

I haven't seen a heeler that would actually work heels in a long time. I'm sure there are some out there but would wager they are few and far between. Last one I worked with would of made a catch dog all he wanted to do was hang from a ear.

In my opinion they are the smartest and best breed of dog that one can own, and I have heard of folks doing real well with them. They are a popular breed in Australia as find dogs and I have no doubt that they will stop and bay a hog. The only problem with them is that they do not hold up for as long as a cur dog. I put my old heeler in a bay pen and he scored better than the seasoned catahoulas and it was his first time to ever see a hog. I used to raise them for cattle and companions, but they are not my choice as a woods dog.

All the heelers I have been around were not friendly with other dogs. In fact, they were flat nasty. I dislike heelers in a great way.

Cross them with a Doberman and a dogo and you'll really have something dont forget the poddle And a plott. All true hog dogs have plott in them somewhere. It's the part that makes them roll in cowpiles.

In my opinion, the heeler bites ankles and will push the targeted animal. A good stock dog will get a head and control the targeted stock. My dad loved heelers, they're smart dogs but we used the Catahoulas for real work. I have never owned one, except when I was a kid.

English Bull Terrier cross Cattle used to be very popular here and was probably the first purpose bred pig dog. Personally I think you'll wear a 22 out getting a good purebred one.
