I've been looking for another using horse/head horse for a while, and found one that I am interested in. Problem is, I am in Houston, and the horse is in Missouri.   I have some pics of the horse, and a youtube video.   I have spoken with the owner at length, and the horse sounds like something that might work for me....  Here's where I need yalls help.  Take a look at the pics and video if you don't mind, and see what holes you see in this horse, to help me see if I am missing something obvious ( or not so obvious)

Here is a condensed description of him.
"He moves like a little horse, catty and quick on his feet. Has been used at 3 rodeos to pick-up and run calves out. One of the rodeos was the Missouri High School Finals. RC will pull a house and doesn’t realize just how much he can pull. Pulls at a walk! Priced way below his worth for a quick sale. RC is SOUND, SANE, HAS NO VICES!!! Hauls great!  "

Here is a brief description of the horse.

Forgot to mention that I will drive up there and try him out, but I want some additional eyes on him before I make a 1300 mile trip to test drive a horse.

Also, if anyone is on the rodeo circuit in the Missouri/ Arkansas area, please let me know, as I'd like to see if you might know the owner of this horse, so I can get some additional feedback about the persons reputation.

How old is he?  He is a nice looking horse and seems laid back but I dont know about catty on his feet....to me it didn't look like he was turning around on his back end completely but I am watching from my phone.

He seemed like he didn't mind dragging or holding the steer but he also didn't seem like he was trailing / watching them while he was pushing....maybe its in his age though since he has only been hauled to three rodeos.

Chris, first let me make it clear....horses ain't my think by any means at all.

Witht that being said....the old man used to talk about folks going two-three states over buying dogs to work/compete here and always laughed about it when the dogs that seemed to do best were right here but some always thought that if they got dogs from far off they would be better for some reason...not saying that is the case with you but could you find a comprable horse closer ?

I don't know the age of this horse, but if the guy said they have used him for picking up at rodeos and stuff he doesn't have much of a handle. Really is helping the horse a lot to get him to turn around.

He is a 2005 model, the dam died, and he was bottle raised, then started under saddle as a four year old.  Said he is a bit lazy by nature, but will come out of the box and put you on the hip of a steer.  The guy also mentioned that they were mainly scoring and tracking, then progressed to practice cattle. He has not used him on fresh/fast steers, and he has not been hauled to any jackpots. Just a started head horse.

As for the pickup part, he mentioned that he only used him picking up at three rodeos, while his other horse was hurt. Said he would get in by the other horse, then fade out on him. I gathered he didn't like being next to the bucking horses Huh?

Said you can shoot of him, use a bullwhip, and has been around the clowns and their clown cap guns without any spook.

I didn't see the quick on his feet part in this video myself.  It has been offered that if I come look at him, to run him through the ringer on their ranch, ride him how I want, and we can take him to the roping pen and try him there too.   But, It's a LONG drive for a test drive....

Bryant,

I feel certain that there is probably a better horse within a 100 miles of my house. Problem is finding that horse.   I put out feelers pretty regular letting people know what I am looking for.  And I will be trying out a couple of head horses this Friday that have been recommended to me, but there is something about this horse that I like.... Just don't want to be looking at him through rose colored glasses, and miss some obvious stuff.

He is Double two eyed jack and goes back to Mr. Baron Bell.  I ride a big head horse/ Working horse with the same bloodlines. (Baron Bell) They are calm natured but it looks like this horse may be a little on the broke side for ranch work.  He doesn't seem to cow really hard in the video.  If he's been tracking on him I would think that he would be covering him up in a pen like that and I'm not real sure he didn't quit on the second pull and he faced him anyhow.   He is really having to guide him around and reached forward on one of the turn backs.   He might not know much but looks healthy and has a nice build.  Did the guy say who he got him from?  Send me some of that information I know a few horsemen around.  I'm good friends with a guy that owned a Baron Bell stud for a long time and has put a lot of colts on the ground.  Hope this helps.  I don't know much about anything but Ive rode a few real good head horses.

Thank you.  That's the info I was looking for.  The ranch this horse come from was called the 4w in Arkansas, might have been around Pine Bluff?

For what it's worth, I have a couple of head horses that I am supposed to try out on Friday, but figured if they didn't work out, I might drive up to MO to try this one...  Really hoping the horses closer to home will suit me.

Chris, that a little dude riding that gray plug... how big he say that colt was?  No offense, but you look like a stout dude... you may want to look for somethin' a bit bigger for a working horse.

Looks like he'd have a lot of vertical motion at a lope(which I hate)... would damn sure want to see some video of him loping circles/stopping before wasting a trip to look at him...

From that video he looks real raw... the guy is doing a good job of keeping it slow and easy from a training perspective, but I believe that's all that colt is capable of at that point... hence the lack of higher speed manuevers...

I like the bloodline, colt is built adequate... should be higher in the front end, deeper chest and a bit more length in back.... but again, he looks rough to ride, lot of motion... gives a man stomach cramps from tryin' ta keep a seat  Grin

Solid dink horse IMO... 2-3K as is...

How much are you wanting to spend?

not  real cowy he was helping  him track and would like to know how he handles bigger cattle since you want him as a using horse seen a lot that will drag light cattle and not even try on a moma cow  just my 2 cents

Chris I agree did not seem all that cowy in the video. I like his picture better with out the saddle better than with. Usally thats the other way around. Lots of bone and stout  but I did not see the catty part of him.looks plenty gentle. Deffently a prospect for you.

Chris
looks like a gentle horse. He is to heavy footed for me. Meaning he is heavy on the ground when he trots thats a shure sign of being on the lazy side.  If you wanted a good solid hunting horse looks like he would work for that. Might take some time to make a head horse out of him
