Fed up with heat cycles

So fustrating!    The last time our female Sweetpea came into heat, we had an accidental litter. She works just as hard to get to the males as they work to get to her.

Well, she came in again and I caught our yard dog trying to dig into her kennel. She was doing her best to cheer him on.  So now I have her on house arrest. Im not taking any chances again. We only have two females, Sweetpea and her daughter, Penny. The rest of our dogs are males. Sweetpea and Penny are good hog dogs but some days I wonder if its worth the trouble of having males and females.

Its amazing what those dogs can do. One time we went outside to see that our male, Foot, who even though was on a chain, had chewed and ripped a hole though the chain link on the females kennel and was standing on the inside of the kennel, still clipped to his chain with no slack. 

Just needed to vent.
Guess we need to spend the money and put them on concrete and find a more durable wire than chainlink.

 I feel ya on this one, Ive got a gyp cd that seem to never be out of heat. Well atleast you caught her before she was bred, I have a couple here that dont swell or show any signs of being in heat until its too late.

  Have you ever thought about a 5 wire electric fence around the outside of the kennel sides hooked up to a really hot shcoker box, thats what i had to do one time on a ranch i was semi living working on with dirt kennels, you can run 1 ground and 4 hot about 2 feet from the ground and it will keep them back from the fence before they get to chewing it or trying to crawl over, cheaper than concrete for sure, terriers are the worst about digging under too by the way i thinklol

  It is frustrating,  I had a gyp for 8 yrs that came in every year the 1st or 2nd  week of january, and was out for 3-4 weeks, finally get threw deer season, and my best dog was in heat!!!    I lost a nice male dog this summer, that would not eat if any gyps were in heat,  he would only eat a lil bit every 2nd or 3rd day.  Then it took 4-6 weeks to look like he wasn't starving to death!

Hey dj you can water your females in a copper pot and that will keep them from coming in. I have done it several times in the past and it has worked. Thats why the put copper on horses bits to. Keeps the mares from horsin.

If you don't plan on breeding her would you consider getting her spade. I've only hunted cut males but not females.  Havent seen any negative effects with a male but was curious if it affects a female?

no it has no effect on the hunt alot of the bear and lion dog packs that the outfitters and guides use run neutered and spade dogs . they can't stand the down time during the season .

I feel your pain Dinah,....my best dog Belle had crazy heat cycles that were never on time, no telling when she would come in. I got tired of dealing with it and had both her and Abby spade. Good thing I did too, when I went to pick Belle up, my vet, who's a friend of mine, said it was a good thing I brought her in,.....she had a really bad case of endometriosis, so all is well that ends well I reckon.

Knightstocker, I have also thought about an electric fence. At least around the female kennel.

txhawdogger, I have heard of the copper thing, I just always figured it was an old wives tale. If it really works then that would be an easy fix. thanks.

Sdogs, she is a really good dog, and a year ago I outcrossed her to a top notch male of ours she had a litter of 10. Eight of those survived. Out of those eight we kept 3 and all three are making good dogs. Good dogs are hard to come by and I want to keep her intact just in case a big boar decreases the size of our pack unexpectedly. Otherwise it would already be done.

Did they correct the problem? Ive never heard of dogs having endometriosis.

lost a great female this year.i use to put her in a hog trap made from heavy chemical crates.it was the only thing that would hold her.any wood or lite wire would be destroyed.also she could climb like a cat.i wish she was still driving me nuts..........

i too have been dealing with these bleeding females the new gyp i cant wait to get in the woods was in heat when i got her a month and a half ago and was bred by accident so i gave her the shot and she is still to this day in standing heat. i let her out today because she looked out of heat and rusty monted her asap but i was right there to make sure he didnt seal the deal. I dont want to get her fixed right now until i see how she hunts. so i feel your pain fo sho

my grandpa used to make a leather strap/diaper thing that he would put on his sheep dogs.
It obviously get "dirty" with pee and poop, but it wouldnt hold any like a diaper.
But a male could wear himself out trying but he wasnt going to get none.....

 Never heard of anything like that before. Got any pics? Sound like it might get kinda gross but I would laugh my butt off at male trying to figure out why things arent working right.
