It never fails that our catch dogs will eventually start finding their own hogs. Bad part is they usually only bark once or twice before they catch. We have had all breeds do it. We even borrowed a Sure nuff catch dog and was told she would never find her own hog. After couple of months she started striking hogs too. Even our Pitt/BMC catch dog started striking. Runs into problem when u have 5 dogs n they all strike. Ugh.

i hunt on horseback and i have a hard time finding bulldogs that wont hunt on there own when run loose. i use a shock collar to train my bulldogs to stay tight till they hear a bay.
are you running your bulldogs loose and walking , atv or horseback ?

X2 is that sarcasm or something? I've never heard of someone saying they have to many dogs that can find hogs. Why don't you just keep your catch dog on lead until the strike dogs bay one up? Sent from my DROID X2 using Tapatalk

I walk hunt, my pit will wind hogs but I don't let her hunt loose that's not her job. She is to go in catch a bayed hog not run around and got winded before it's her turn. JMO everyone is different.

I just run lead in catch dogs but when we are walk hunting the ol' pits start acting stupid then next thing ya know bay dogs are getting one bayed up. They just seem to get a lil more piggy. I'm sure if we turned 'em loose they could but not how I run so I'd say if ya gonna let them run loose like that just put a garmin around their and go to catchin' pigs.

My " Rough Pitbull " will bark if he finds his own hog before he catches sometimes... Not a problem to me.. Ive had several people tell me its a good thing.. You know where he is and that you better get that way quick... But if he is going to a bay or another dog is there then he has no hesitation to run in and catch...

Any full blooded bulldog that ever bays a hog is cull as a catch dog.
Those are the ones that will put you in a bind one day and get good dogs killed.

But IMO, a bulldog that tracks, finds, barks a couple times, and catches BY HIMSELF is fine... Not barking would be putting him in a bind more than it would if he didnt... I didnt like it at all when he first did it, but the more i talk to others and the more i think about it, i have no problem with it... Now if I send him to a bay and he runs in and barks and doesnt attempt to catch, that will be the day he is a cull to me...

Well i know for a fact mine will find and catch hogs but they won't bark..that happened to me many of times. Usually it happened a lot when we roaded dogs and the strike dogs lost the hogs my catchdogs found and caught them. Just recently I walk hunted with critter catcher and it's new to me because i have always hunted from a truck. My dogs get wore out more on the lead than letting them run so its still something im figureing out.

I had a pit that always bayed a hog before she would catch she would get the hog like she wanted it and catch she never bayed more than a few seconds she never got. Cut and die at the old age of 10 years old and never caused a bay dog to get cut .

We don't use pure pit bulls n all ours are running. We don't haul or lead anything. Takes fun out of hunting IMO. Guess we have to deal with it. No worries. Been doing it for a long time just thought u guys had some advice. Thanx for stories.
